chemical equations Can someone please give me step by step instructions on how to balance a chemical equation??? For examle, the equation--
NH3 + NO ---> N2 + H2O

Actually, Mousy made one mistake in the steps they gave...
You're supposed to start with the element you have the most of, but leave hydrogen and oxygen to the end. ]
Start with the element that you have the most of.
In this case, let's look at hydrogen. You have 3 on the left and 2 on the right, so you cross-multiply.
2NH3 + NO -> N2 +3H2O
Now look at oxygen. You now have 1 on the left and 3 on the right, so put a 3 in front of NO.
2NH3 + 3NO -> N2 +3H2O
Finally, nitrogen. You have 5 on the left and 2 on the right, so put 2 1/2 in front of the N2.
2NH3 + 3NO -> 2 1/2N2 +3H2O
Now, you can make it all whole numbers by multiplying everything by 2.
4NH3 +6NO -> 5N2 +6H2O ]
