On the road to dying my hair my mom stands in the way.
Question Posted Tuesday September 26 2006, 1:30 pm
I asked my mom the other night if I could dye my hair black she had replied no and told me she didn't have to give me a reason as to why she said no.
Finally, she still said no but said she would change her mind if I could come up with 20 valid and good reasons as to why she should allow me.
I believe I have 8-10 at this moment.
My main reason is to express individuality because I'm outgoing and charismatic but she just doesn't seem to believe it.
What do I do?
I've been wanting to dye my hair black for at-least 3 years.
I've tried negotiating and I'll be 15 October 5th and it doesn't even seem like a possible present unless I have 20 reasons.

Your mother just doesn't want you to dye your hair, and my guess is that she doesn't expect you to actually come up with 20 reasons. If she did, she would have asked for 50. Thats a cynical thought, perhaps, but I am being honest.
My guess: that is why she didn't give you her reason; she didn't want to tell you outright "I dont like it, and that is how its going to be. Its my way or the highway". She is a parent, of course she is going to doubt your reasons, her point of view is drastically different. What you might think is cool, might very well be, in her mind, something thats stupid and impulsive. I would advise you to not get your hopes up, you could very well give her 20 reasons and still be told 'NO'. All parents are different so its hard to say, you would be the best judge of that.
To play devils advocate (and possibly sympathize with your mother): Whats wrong with your natural hair color? Your mother might simply be wanting you to be happy with yourself as you are, w/o having to change yourself.
Saying this might get me a negative response, but hey, I'm being honest here.

After you give your best 20 (or more) reasons, let the last one be this: at first I will not use a permanant dye. This can work out well because your mom probably won't be able to come up with any good reasons why you shouldn't just try it out like that. Trying it out will lead to better chances of you actually being allowed to do it. Your mom will get a taste of it and probably think that it's not as bad as she imagined. You can then use it as leverage to get it done permanantly as well. Everybody saw it, so many people liked it, I feel so good about myself, thanks so much for letting me do it...etc. Your mom is worried that you will get negative response from it and that is why she is skeptical about it. Any 20 reasons you can come up with won't prove that dying your hair will be positive. It might not make you feel good about yourself, you might hate it, people might think bad things about you...etc. Your mom is trying to protect you from these things because she cares. REAL positive feedback from a trial run will be very much to your advantage. Good luck. :) [ sizzlinmandolin's advice column | Ask sizzlinmandolin A Question ]

1. It'll express your individuality.
2. You and other people think it'll suit you. It looks good on you.
3. You're becoming 15, and you feel a sense of change and this'll help show you're getting older.
4. It shows independence.
5. Makes my self-confidence rise.
6. It shows in my ability to make choices and decisions, and to deal with the consequences.
7. It'll expand my self-image to people.
8. It's better hair than drugs or some other dangerous thing.
9. Weren't you my age once? Didn't you want to be different and change yourself?
10. It's helping me look towards who I am and who I want to be ; it's helping me find myself.
11. If I don't like it, it's always changeable. I can dye it back.
12. Makes my personality stand out more and it matches with it.
13. I've been waiting for 3 years until I thought I was mature enough to make the decision, and I think I'm ready to dye it.
14. I'LL LOVE YOU FOREVER! ( to crack a joke, make her laugh haha )
15. I'll pay for it, or do it myself.
16. I'll do chores or do lawn work or whatever if I need to work for it and show you I'm mature enough and ready enough.
17. Who knows? You might even like it better than the hair I had before.
18. I will also pay for each time I need to get it re-dyed every so often.
Like I said, I'm sorry I couldn't come up with 20 reasons, but I hope some of those reasons helped. ( Sorry also if you already had some of them written down ). [ MelLeDisko's advice column | Ask MelLeDisko A Question ]
