Question Posted Thursday September 7 2006, 11:58 pm
no matter how i try to study... i just can't seem to be able to. are there any ways for studying?? i'm currently in the 9th grade and i passed every other grade 8 and under. but i think i should REALLY try this year. please give me some advice.
Mathematics: needs tons of work.
Social Studies: needs lots of work.
Spanish: i wanna get a head start on this language.
English: needs help with story writing.
math-do the homework and study your notes is really important. you have to study your notes. and know the formulas as well, write them on flashcards and study from that
social studies: use acronyms and other things to remember. you have to memorize a lot in that class so like the first person said, use different things it may be silly but it works
spanish: again, use flash cards and do your homework.
english: to me that would be the hardest one. writing is a very hard thing to do. you need to brainstorm, rough draft, edited draft, edit again, and then the final copy. for the editing part you should edit it yourself, peer edit (have friends edit it), parent edit maybe (your parents edit it) and then teacher edit. ask your teacher before or after class to edit your paper. she or he will be the best help especially if its your teacher, he or she knows the grading rubric and stuff. hope i helped

Math: it really depends on what you are taking. Algebra, to me, is pretty simple. If you know the formulas you should pass the class, maybe not with an A, but with at LEAST a C (probably a B though). Formulas include distance, midpoint, slope, quadratic, slope-intercept form, standard form, and point-slope form. To know them, just make flashcards and do the homework. Most textbooks have the answers to selected practice problems in the back of the book. If you get something wrong, circle it and try it again to see what you did wrong.
Social Studies: this class is all about memorizing. Memorizing can be tough. You need to make acronyms (like USA stands for Unites States of America) and associations. At least I do. For example, if I had to know that in 1921 World War II began, I would think of it mathematically: 9+2 is 11, and the two 1's in 11 surround the date. Things like that stick, usually. And also, World War II is the same as WWII, which looks like WW11. See what I mean? Find small things. Also, think randomly of things that relate to your studies. Say I had to know that Socrates proposed the doctrine of recollection. I would probably think of my neighbor's dog (whose name is Socrates) and how he collects (recollection) bones. Then I would just picture my neighbor's dog in a lab coat (doctor, which sounds like doctrine) with a collection of bones. Do you see what I mean? I know it sounds silly, but it really helps.
Spanish: this class is like a mixture between Math and Social Studies. There is memorizing and understanding involved. If you really want to get something out of Spanish, study daily. I made flashcards for all my vocabulary and went through them daily. This took 5 minutes at most. Then I would pick about 5 to really try to learn. Then the next day, I'd do the same thing. Basically DO THE HOMEWORK and PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS. Most Spanish teachers don't actually check the homework for accuracy, they just want to see that you tried. Don't take advantage of this. Actually try to do it right.
English: writing takes time. I had some trouble with writing in 9th grade, too. What helped me was to ask my teacher before or after school to read my paper to see if it was good. She would make suggestions such as "Don't use the word ____ so much" or "Describe this in more detail". Teachers really do help. It doesn't even have to be YOUR teacher. Any English teacher who you know would do it for you.

If you dont want a tutor, ask your teachers if you can come in early for school or stay late for school so they can help you. Trust me on this, if you ask your teachers, they will be surprised and will know that you really want to improve your grades. So they'll pay extra attenion to you and will understand. Another thing you can do is study... but you dont have to study when you're awake! If you have a recorder ((if you dont, buy one!)) tape yourself saying your homework. For example... Math- you could say into the recorder 5 x 5 = 25. ((obviously not that... something that you need to study is what you say into there.)) and then when you're sleeping, play the recorder. This works soo well!!!! your brain actually listens to this as you're sleeping. so you can study while you're sleeping too! thats awesome isnt it??
Seets answered Friday September 8 2006, 10:15 am: an old psyche trick is if you can make the information go into your brain three different ways i.e. read it, write it and say it aloud it should stay.
Give yourself quotes and things and cues to remember. Also schools often have tutors that are free - you should see if they can give you some pointers. [ Seets's advice column | Ask Seets A Question ]
