Scared 17/f

Question Posted Thursday September 7 2006, 9:27 pm

This might be long, thanks for reading if you do.

Ok I get scared really easily. It doesn't even have to be a big deal, most of the time it isn't.

Here's a few examples..

*There was a spider by my bed the other day, and that night I could NOT go near my bed because I was afraid it was still there, or that there was more. And everytime I got in it I felt them crawling on me. So I had to sleep on the couch.

*I was home alone during the day while my parents were working and someone called and hung up. I really started getting scared that someone was watching me or something.

*Everytime I watch a scary movie, I dwell on it. Like I think about what would I do if that happens to me, or how could someone do that etc. I know it's simple to say just don't watch them but it's the way I feel that's upsetting, not the movie.

Everytime I get scared I have to tell myself to breathe or I'll literally hyperventilate.

I'm so afraid of people. I know not everyone is bad but these days, it's hard to tell who is and isn't.

I'm just so afraid to live life. No one really even knows about this. I don't know what to do anymore. I just wanna live my life like a normal teenager. It's pretty sad when you have to check under your bed at night when you're 17 years old!

That being said, does anyone have any advice on how I can help myself overcome this problem? Or any advice at all..

Thanks

What to do?

If there is a spider or any type of bug bring bug repellent and keep it in arms reach of your sleep or where ever you are in your house.

If your home alone and get scared because they hung up look at caller id and call them back. Close all blinds and lock the doors it'll make you feel protected.

I dwell on scary movies/shows to, first off if you dream about it use a dreamcatcher it catches bad dreams, try to avoid the scary movies for a while until your sure you can stand it.

Yes, that is normal but hun, you gotta take your chances. If you feel shy around strangers stick to someone close or think of something funny in your head thats what I do.

If you want to live your life, live it. Take chances you may have a phobia but hey, who knows? Life runs by choice not chance.

okay, this happens to me too! my brother tells me that the best soultion is this- so if something happens ((ex.- scared of the dark)) go in a dark room, relax and force yourself to stay there. You'll see in about 2 minutes that theres nothing there. Or in your case, the spider story. when you see a spider, go into bed, check the bed, shake the covers, check the floors ((this may seem silly because you said it's weird for a 17 year old to do this, but you only do this once, then you never have to do it again cuz you wont be scared.)) Check if theres a spider. Then... get into bed, leave the lights on and just lay down. Relax for about 5-10 minutes. Soon you'll see that theres nothing there. Then close the lights and relax for 5-10 minutes, you'll see that theres nothing there. Now close your eyes and sleep, you'll see theres nothing there.

I hope I helped!

I have quite a similar problem. About the whole spider thing, yeah. That's happened to me so many times. But if you try to force yourself to think of pleasant things (such as a tropical beach or whatever you find comforting) instead of what's worrying you, sometimes it can distract you from your irrational fears. Also, try to get your mind involved in something that you enjoy. That way you won't be thinking about the disturbing stuff. Trust me, it's worked a lot of times for me. Just stay busy.
I hope this helps. :)
