There is a upside to learning sign language, for starters it will be something special that you can carry on with you through lige & it's a way to really help your friend right now. My 12 year old sister knows sign language because her best-friend is deaf. Just this past weekend I asked my sister to help me learn it. In two hours I got the whole Alphabet down pat *even after you have learned it, keep doing it just while your listening to music, or watching t.v. this way you won't forget it)(that should be the first thing you learn because if you forget the hand signal for a whole word, you can just spell it out) The best advice I can give you as far as learning it goes, Is write on a piece of paper to Ashley, telling you you would like for her to teach you sign language. I'm sure she would love to be able to teach you new things and it's also a better way for you and her to bond. Here's a few websites that might help you. (Most ppl either learn from a video or a deaf person teaches them)

Sometimes a teacher or principle will suddenly get very supportive if a parent threatens to take a problem to the school board, which might not be a bad idea anyway.
There are several sign language sites. Here are a couple of good ones, and I hope they are helpful to you. You are a very good friend. :)
