how can i keep my side bangs in place without using a ton of hairspray?

When you are blow drying your hair take a big round brush and use that on your bangs. Then take a straightener and straighten them however you want them to stay. But stay away from water. That should keep them in place but if it still doesnt then use a TINY bit of hairspray but not to the point where your hair gets crunchy.
