Well, i said the quote "I'm the new Berlin wall, try and tear me down" to a friend. She started to go off on me about how the berlin wall was bad because it devided berlin in two. Wasn't it intended for good?
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF THER BERLIN WALL WAS GOOD OR BAD?
Alpha345 answered Tuesday August 29 2006, 10:08 pm: It became a symbol for communism and it's represiveness.
So yes, it was bad.
The soviets began building it after a small confrontation between the Allies and Soviets over the issue of free passage over into West Germany. There was a stand-off, and the Soviets backed down only to build a huge wall (however, the first materials were nothing more than barbed wire and sandbags). It progressed and eventually became a towering wall that seperate west and east berlin. It also is the "point" of origin for the so called "Iron Curtain" that was the name for the European division from West to East, Democracy and Communism.
Yes it seperated families, neighboors, businesses, etc. But it was more of a division of democracy and communism and the countries each political party it represented.
You could have googled it, but somehow I don't think your results would have yielded much to your answer.
MelLeDisko answered Tuesday August 29 2006, 8:12 pm: well, it really is your own opinion wether or not the berlin wall was good or bad. whenever the allies won world war II, that's when the berlin wall was built, so keep east berlin and west berlin seperated because east berlin was still controlled by germany, while west berlin was controlled by the allies. so basically, it was intended to keep the allies from over-taking it and giving germany some power. so i believe it was intended for bad. it kept many families apart, and nobody could get across, and whenever they'd try to climb over the wall, they'd get shot and they'd die, or the barbed wire would get them. and whenever the berlin wall was torn down, so many people were happy to finally see it be torn down. but like i said, that is only my opinion. everyone is intitled to their own. i hope i helped. <3 [ MelLeDisko's advice column | Ask MelLeDisko A Question ]
uisforukelele answered Tuesday August 29 2006, 7:26 pm: in my opinion, it was intended for bad. it split east and west berlin, and people couldn't leave or come in. so to me, it seems like that would really suck. besides that, there was a war going on. google it. in short, the Berlin Wall was built to seperate East and West Berlin, the capital of Germany after the Allies won World War II. The Germans built the Wall to keep the people of East Berlin, still controlled by Germany, from escaping to West Berlin, which was controlled by the Allies. i'm not gonna shove my beliefs down your throat, but personally, i think it was a bad thing.
but here is a link that tells you why the wall was built so that you can make your own decision and find out all the facts. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Teza answered Tuesday August 29 2006, 6:28 pm: When I had German last year, my teacher talked about the Berlin Wall. It was bad because it separated a whole bunch of people and kept people from getting in. It could of been good in some ways, but people don't remember it much as being a positive thing. We also watched a video and it showed people being soo happy when it was tore down. [ Teza's advice column | Ask Teza A Question ]
