Ballet at 14

Question Posted Wednesday August 23 2006, 9:05 pm

I did ballet for 4years and I had to quit because of family reasons. Now I'm fourteen and I want to start again. I've found some videos and books and I'm going to teach myself. But what I wanted to know, if any of you are dancers and if you give me some tips and help me
with getting shoes. I'm so lost with the shoes part.
Like:
What is street size?
M and W, what is it?
A B and C, how narrow is that?
Can I run and dance? Will that improve it?
Do you think you teach yourself?
and anything else you think might be good to know when you first start :).

Thanks so Much!
Sara Marie

Well when getting shoes the only good place to go is professional dance stores (not target or payless) and they will messure your foot there and tell you what size you are. They usually are not your street size which is the size in tennis shoe you wear. Dance shoes usually run either bigger or smaller depending on the brand. I have never seen any M&w and the a,B,&c and i have been dancing for 14 years. As a said before you should go get professionally messured and then with the size you got look online if you are trying to save money.

I would not run while dancing. I have read that running is bad for dancers because it can create very unwanted injuries. If you are looking to exercise i would stick to something like yoga or pilaties.

and i would say teaching yourself only goes so far. Although you can teach yourself basic steps it is hard to go farther without having a teacher there telling you what you are doing right or wrong.

Make sure you always stretch well. When i have classes we usually spend atleast the first 20-30 mins stretch. It is very important in keeping your body healthy and preventing injury.

Best of luck
