running the mile...

Question Posted Tuesday August 22 2006, 7:30 pm

I need help to train for the gym fitness test that I will be taking early this year. I am not extremely out of shape, for most of the fitness test (pushups, situps, and sit and reach) however, I cant run for my life. Does anyone have any tips on how to train for the 1 mile run? I need to get a reasonable time (like 10 minutes and below) but I also have a breathing disorder that has to do with my vocal cords, making it harder to keep my breathing inline when I run. Please help me with a training guideline!

Just practice running around your neighborhood before the test. Start out with a quarter of a mile a day for a few days, then go a third, then half. Don't go through these "levels" too fast, though- you could strain yourself.

I wouldn't count on a doctor's note. Gym teachers are tough. When I was in junior high I had to run 1/3 of a mile in under 4 min. during every gym class, which was every other school day, and I have asthma. My teacher never went easy on me, and he even overrid a doctor's note. The best you can do is try, because gym teachers have no mercy.

If you can't keep your breathing in line, your coach shouldn't make you do it. Get a doctor's excuse. Running when you have breathing problems is SERIOUS and should not be taken lightly.
