You need to figure out what kind of learner you are, tactile (touching things), visual (seeing things), or verbal learners (hearing things). This will help you get ahead by studying in the best way for you.
What worked for me was re-writing my notes after class every day and using mnemonics - a trick to help you remember stuff I still remember the 4 oceans by saying I Am A Person - the first letter of each word is the first letter of each Ocean Indian, Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific.

You can read a history testbook like you would read a novel. You have to read slowly and if you dont understand the paragraph again. Youll eventually understand it. If during class your teacher says something you dont understand raise your hand or stay after class or school and ask him for some help.
At night i would study alot even if theres no test or quiz. Just study what your teacher talked about in class that day.
And even if your grades dont go up you can tell and show your mom that you are trying to raise your grade.
