I need help writing a song..

Question Posted Tuesday August 15 2006, 7:30 pm

Okay, I'm wanting to write an emotional song. I want it to have a lot of the stuff I went through in my life put into it, I just don't know how to start it or anything. And I've already been to the Robyn Kendrick website, so that didn't help either. I was sexually abused by my cousin from the time I was 5 to the time I was 11. Then, my mom and dad got divorced, and that's been really hard for me. Lastly, I have like an eating disorder now. My mom thinks I'm anorexic because I won't eat and I'm throwing up now. Now because of this, I've wanted to cut myself and express my feelings and emotions, but I'm thinking it'd be better to express it into a song instead of harming myself. So If anyone can help me on my song, it'd be highly appreciated! Thanks!

It sounds like youve gone through a lot in your life. When ever i feel like writing a song, i just start writing down my feelings in a poetic way. and then i mold it into more like a songish poem thing...also, keep a pen and some paper with u whereever you are. and then if you hear something good or think of something you can write it down quick!

Also, if you ever ever feel like huring yourself, go strait to a school councilor or someone that can help you. Just keep your head up and instead of thinking of all of the horrible things that have happend to you, think of all the great things that will happen to you, like writing a song that will reach the top of the charts! Just smile. Be happy.

Good Luck

First of all, I want to just apologize for all that stuff happening to you. Nobody deserves all of that, and that shows you're really strong for standing through all of that and smart for realizing writing is so much better than infliciting pain onto yourself.

But, to write, it doesn't have to be written from the first time. What I might want to do is keep possibly a diary and just write and write and let your feelings out [ or a notebook ] and any time you see a part that would be good for a song, just mark it or something adn then once you think you have enough, just try and put it altogether. That's what Christinia Aguleria [sp] told MTV on television the other day that she does now.

Or just freewrite. Whenever you're feeling angry or sad, or even happy just write whatever's coming out of your mind and hand. And just keep it going. And the good thing about songs lately is that most of them [ at least the bands I listen to ] don't even do that rhyming thing anymore so you can just say anything you want and make it your own.

I hope I helped. <3

Let me start out by saying that I am so, so sorry some of that stuff happened to you. And you are absolutely right that it is better to write a song about it than to hurt yourself.

You can start by listening to your favorite artists and getting inspired. Think about the way they put their lyrics together, what the styles they use, and what you like most about their lyrics. (For example, do they use metaphor? Do they use rhyme?)

What you should do next is just free-write. It doesn't have to be structured or organized; just get down what you're feeling, and work from there. Try to put what you've written down into phrases that fit together, and then you can start organizing it into verses and choruses. It doesn't matter if your first or second or even third song isn't very good; you can always go back and edit it later.

I really hope I've helped, and good luck writing fabulous songs :)

well, you already sort of have the first step down, you know what you want to say... but you need to just...It's hard to explain...you have to feel what you want to say...don't just think about it, feel it again, and act like you are telling the story to someone...then, decide what you want for the chorus, it should tie the song together. The verses tell the story, the first verse is usually the begining of the story, and the last verse is about the ending, then sometimes they put the chorus after that, and it ties all of the verses, maybe it could say how you feel about it...I will give you an example from one of my songs:

verse 1
Is anybody listening to me, can anybody hear my crying pain? I am screaming, searching for life, am I invisable to you, do you even care. All you do is look away.

Chorus
My heart is broken, broken! I'm running out the door, quicker than before. My heart is broken, broken! I'm runnin' 'way from pain, I'm runnin' 'way from life. My heart is broken... You stabbed me in the heart with a knife.

Verse 2
I called you on the phone last night, you said you had to go. "it's all right" I am crying, hoping for love, I thought we'd be together for life, was I wrong to think? You ignore my every plead.

Chorus

verse 3
You told me you loved me, but did you really mean it. You gave me a kiss, but did you mean to say goodbye. Everything you do seems to be the opposite, but what you mean to say, so tell me the truth before I run away!

chorus
verse 4
some of my friends say, that you never loved me, some of them say that you still do. Don't you understand I need to hear it from you? So I'll give you a chance to tell me the truth, but I'm afraid that when I do...you'll just say no....That's why...

chorus x2

I know that that was long...you don't have to read the whole thing...I just wanted to show you that I(tried to at least)make the chorus, say how I felt about it...I know that I probably did a lowsy job at it, but I hope that I at least helped a little...remember that my inbox is always open. You don't have to rate, but it would be nice. Thanks!
