english teacher

Question Posted Monday August 14 2006, 11:59 pm

I love my schedule this year, but my english class is just horrible. The teacher only gave an A to one person last year, and it was a 90%. All of my friends have said she's extremely hard, and she even told us today that she is tough. This isn't an AP or honors class either. There are 3 other english classes that I could be in. I might fill out a schedule-change form to get a different teacher. If they don't let me change teachers, what do I do??

[ Answer this question ]

Additional info, added Tuesday August 15 2006, 12:00 am:
**the other 3 english classes are taught by different teachers**.

ironically, i'm having the same exact problem. i don't know what to do either. my english teacher is an old black lady (not to be racist). and she only likes a select group of people out of my class. today she accused me of cheating because i was flipping open the cover of my book that was on the floor with my foot. and when i told her i didn't understand a story we read out of our literature book, she told me to stop trying to get into arguments with her. she's stupid and i really don't know what to do either :(

1. Do all the reading twice no matter what.
This will give you a clear idea of the thematic and technical
aspects that are important from the novel or poem.
Teachers who fancy themselves all important tend to like nit-picky facts, so if you've read it twice you'll be more apt to pick up on details.
2. Talk in class.
Always have an opinion on everything the teacher asks, and be ready with hand up. This can really really make a difference in what the teacher thinks of you and what you learn from the class.
3. Have a trusted teacher read your essays first.
Take your papers to a favorite teacher before you turn them in to this teacher and get their feedback-- they'll catch the small things that this teacher would mark you down for without the penalty.

Be as good a student as you can be, and don't let yourself slack because the class seems impossible. If a class is being fairly run, it is not impossible to get an A. If you've been in the class for a semester and feel as if it was not fairly run, tell your counselor about it and request a switch.

You can take the class next semester from a different teacher possibly, but in case you are stuck with her, you had better do your best. Tell her right from the beginning that you want to study hard and learn a lot. Sit in the front of the class and take a ton of notes! Ask for lots of help from her directly and let her see your effort. Usually this helps to win favor. She may be the toughest, but the best teacher you ever had. In any case, you will carry your skills with you throughout your life. Better to get a B from a teacher who actually taught you something, than an A from a teacher who just hands them out. Grades will only take you so far, and you will have to actually use what you've learned someday.

I am sorry to say you are just going to have to deal with it. Work harder, and pay attention to her criticism, and you'll get a good grade. In the long run it is better to have a tough teacher, so don't give up.

teachers give you the grade by what you deserve. Having a harder english can be a challenge for you. Switching your schedule so you can have the easier way out would be cheating in a way. I would wait a little while & see if it gets any better for you. I say in about a month if your grade is horrible then switch. But dont put as the reason to get out "the teacher is to hard" put the reason as the "class is to hard." You shouldnt swtich because of the teacher because they wont do it.

hope this helps.

Having a tougher teacher is better though. It challenges you more, and it forces you to go above what you would regularly do. I think you shouldn't sell yourself short and stick with it. And obviously getting an A is not impossible, you just have to work for it. I say...just stick with it...and don't take the easy way out. In life, there's no easy button...so what are you going to do when things get tough on you?

Your just gonna have to deal with it. I had a crazy english teacher my sophmore year, luckily i had a lotta friends in that class with me, and some that had a different period but the same teacher so we always talked about the crazy things she did. And she was LITERALLY crazy, she was the ONLY teacher i hugged becuase because i was sooo happy that i would never have to see her again. Now that i look back even though she was a terrible teacher, the situation wasn't as bad as we made it. It's a part of life, don't try to find an easy way out.

If you notice you start doing bad, stay after a lot and ask for help. Learn what writing style that teacher likes best and do your best to emulate it.

I would wait. Maybe the challenge could be good for you? And you don't know for sure that tehre was only 1 A because i doubt you asked every single student what they got. If her class was that hard that no one could get an A then she wouldn't be teaching. I would stick with in.. Looking for the easy way out isn't going to help you in the end
