This is something I've wondered for a while so I'd like to see what some parents on here say.
Well I'm 16 and my parents act like they were perfect little teenagers. They say that they didn't party, drink, spend random nights out, etc. But I know it's not true because I've heard many many things from their parents and siblings about all kinds of things like that.
So my question is, why don't parents let their kids make their own mistakes? I mean I know they just want to keep us safe and such but they did all those things and they turned out fine.
And on some level, I know that most parents know that their kids lie to them. Like when they say they're going somewhere but go somewhere else. So why can't they just skip the lying part?
When people are kids they always say things like *I'm never going to treat my children this way* or *When I have kids I'm going to let them do that* so why does that change when you actually DO have kids?

They lived in a totally different time as you.
In this day and age, there is such a problem with teens binge drinking and dying from alcohol poisoning, date rape, boys drugging girls in their drinks so they can do that, and the list goes on and on from there.
Mostly, they are trying to keep you safe, sane, and alive.
It would be better if they didn't lie but sometimes the true story isn't something they want you to hear due to sheer embarassment, or maybe something bad happened to them and the stuff you hear is only what their parents and siblings know. You never can tell. [ Brandi_S's advice column | Ask Brandi_S A Question ]

Yea It didn't work. I set rules for her, things I told her she wasnt allowed to do because some actions, really can ruin your life. Others, I did because I wanted to spare her from any hurt. I never like to see my sister cry, and if I can do something to prevent that, then I will. She's 17 now... and last year she hated me for it but this year, she thanked me for putting my foot down. Also, it's much more dangerous these days, there's so many things that could happen to you that were pretty much out of the question back then.
They're just trying to make you a much better person.
Think about this scenario::
Your parents don't care if you drink, so you drink as much as you want. What if you grow up to be an alchoholic?
This could be the same thing with smoking//ect.
