There are a lot of good suggestions already.
Recently my speakers did the same thing. I tried all those things and they didn't work.
Turns out my cat had stepped on the mute button on my keyboard. It took me two days to figure that out. So, just check and make sure that nothing happened to mute the computer. And if that doesn't work, check the specs and such as everyone else suggested. Another thing to try is make sure they didn't accidentally come unplugged. When I worked tech support for a major computer company (printers), the plugs would wiggle loose just a little bit. They would look plugged in, but not be in enough for power. Since you tried other speakers, this is not likely to be the problem, but it is something to double check.

System specs? OS? Well, i'll assume you're on windows xp, first of all, do some basic troubleshooting. Unplug the speakers, plug them in again and start a song, check the master volume level. Open your volume controls window and make sure nothing is muted or too low. Next, you may want to make sure that they're plugged into a power source, then try swapping them out with other speakers to see if it's the hardware.

That happens to me sometimes, too .. it might not be a problem with your speakers. Go to Start on your computer, then to Control Panel. When you're at the Comtrol Panel, go to Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices. Go to Adjust System Volume and see if it's on mute. My computer randomly goes on mute sometimes haha .. but if it's not on mute, try going to your speaker settings on the control panel. =)

You Might have a virus in your computer. Try scanning it with Norton Anti Virus..Ad-Aware SE Personal or Prevx1..you can find all of those on www.download.com..or it could always be your speakers its self..if you dont have a virus problem..then you might need new speakers. If non of that works..try Re Formating your computer.
