Your abs are just a series of 6 little tiny muscles no way they can handle that much work in such a little amount of time. Your body handles short, intense bursts of exertion a lot better than it does slow, extreme exertion...which is why you should only exercise for about an hour.

The only value 700 crunches will have in the slimming process is to burn some calories. Then, assuming that you eat less than you burn, you may lose weight (overall mind you). However, compared to doing an overall body workout, it is a waste of time.
One more thing... In my experience between doing say sets of 100 regular crunches or sets of 15 weighted crunches (with a weight on your chest or behind your head), I have seen better results with the latter. Also takes way less time. I am now talking of the crunch as a muscle building exercise, all of the above regarding fat loss still holds.
As for whether its bad for you, I am not sure. If your form is right it shouldnt be harmful, but if your form is wrong you may strain your neck and/or back. [ Alin75's advice column | Ask Alin75 A Question ]
abercrombie.LvR answered Tuesday August 8 2006, 9:17 am: The only way to know if it's bad for you is by figuring out if you're in pain. Not crunching pain but a different kind of pain. Like you're gunna faint or something like that.
If you're trying to burn fat in your stomach area then it will be really affective. After I do a tremendous amount of crunches my stomach is really sore the next morning! That's good, it means you burnt some fat!
