distance learning

Question Posted Wednesday July 26 2006, 7:32 pm

Hi bettyboopstr ( love your name by the way) I am a 42 year old woman. I am married. and have 3 children. I have been a factory worker for many years but would love to get into some kind of counceling work. Preferably family counceling but am open to other possibilities. My problem is time. I live in a low income area of kenticky. The closest University to me would be a round trip of 3 hours. This would be very difficult for me wiht my work schedule and my family as well. I have been considering ditance learning. I see many programs offered on the internet ( PCDI, Penn Foster etc.) How can I be sure upon completing a program like this that I would be qualified to work in said field or whether or not that typt of degree would even be acceptable. I want to do this very badly as I feel it is my calling but I certainly don't want to waste my time or money either. Any ideas or suggestions would be very appreciated. thanks

I suggest you sit down with your husband and make a plan. I am single and made it through despite many years of obstacles but the one thing I made sure to do was to complete it. I am going on year 8 with two quarters to go. When there is a passion, it does not matter how long it takes you, it just matters if you finish.
As far as not knowing what to pursue I suggest talking to a University admissions counselor. They may have some sort of tests you can take that will determine what degree you want to pursue. Just so you know, the first two years are the exploration years anyway and so an A.A in Liberal Arts wouldnt be a bad idea because there you would get a taste of all the classes and perhaps form some type of opinion on what you want to do.
As far as the distance goes, maybe you guys could move closer to the university or take online classes that are offered from the university that you talked about. Perhaps the first year you could do all online courses to demonstrate to yourself and your family how serious you are and then maybe that would help your husband decide if you should move closer to the University.
I hope that this helped and keep in touch as to what your plans are for the future. Good Luck!! (and remember, its not an easy road but the uneasy roads are the most rewarding)
