You can use the templates, but I always find that they are inevitably just a little bit "off". All printers are a little different, so you really can't make a template that will work universally.
What I do is use tables. I set up a table with cells corresponding to where the labels are on the sheet. First, I make my best guess as to where they will print (measuring the label sheet is a good start; I have a ruler marked in 10ths of an inch). Then, I fill the cells with text, and print a test sheet. If you don't want to print the test on an actual label sheet (they are expensive), then print it on a regular sheet and then hold it and the labels up to the light to see how they line up.
Make adjustments in your margins and the size of the label cells accordingly. It usually takes me 3 tests to get it absolutely perfect, and it's a frustrating process.
Obviously, the bigger the labels you use, the more room you have for error. And if you want to avoid the whole problem, you can buy label sheets that are just one big 8.5 x 11 label, and then cut it up AFTER you print on it. ]
at microsoft.com, they have different templates for the kind of labels you want. on the package of actual labels it will say how big the labels are, so you can search for that on microsoft.com and it will have a template you can download for free. and all you have to do is type in whatever you want on the label. also, sometimes on the actual label package it has instructions on how to adjust the settings in microsoft word to fit the labels. but if not you can always download a template from microsoft. ]
