i've noticed that in movies/pictures from like 100 years ago, women had extremely small waists (like 20 inch waists). i was wondering if they were just wearing corsets that made them extra skinny, or if they were just naturally that skinny? because i'm 15/f, 5'3", and my waist is like 28 inches, and my friends are the same. have women evolved that much?

Women and men were also generally a little smaller back then, due to less adequate nutrition and inferior medical care.
A 28" waist on a 5'3 inch woman is certainly not large. I'd say it's a little smaller than average, and all other things being equal perfectly healthy. That's actually the same measurements to be found on my wife, and I've always found her to be of beautiful proportions. [ Xenolan's advice column | Ask Xenolan A Question ]
BLONDShorty answered Wednesday July 26 2006, 8:07 pm: no. i don't think that they evolved that much in such a short period of time. it was a long time ago, but not so much for a huge difference. but, yes women wore corsets all the time. they were whale-bone corsets but they were very bad for you because they weren't like the "corsets" we have today or the weight reducers. they would push your organs down. but, i believe the smallest record for the waist was 13 inches. i think. hope i helped. *muaz* xoxo [ BLONDShorty's advice column | Ask BLONDShorty A Question ]

So, it's not about evolution at all, naturally those women were shaped much like we are, it's about social convention: from the 1700's to 1900 nearly every European women wore a corset. The corset originally fell from use because a more natural shape was thought more attractive and achieved with the use of elastic and panty hoes instead. Then the corset stayed away as women began to see them as torture devices of the old male-dominated world.
Women haven't evolved (although the civilized world as a whole has certainly gained weight) just our fashions have changed. Squeezing ourselves down to a 16 inch waist no longer determines our marriage prospects. [ Razhie's advice column | Ask Razhie A Question ]
