How do you ask a guy whether or not he has a girlfriend, with out just coming directly out and saying it?

I think coming out and asking him would be the best idea! In conversation just be like, "Hey, are you seeing anyone right now?" It's really the easiest way!

Actually there is no better way to do it without asking the guy directly, however the key is timing and tact, asking this question at an appropriate time and with tact not only will provide you with the answer but also his emotional response will be flourishing .
Example of timing & tact : perhaps during the time you all are dialoguing about things close to your heart like family or something going on with each of you personally etc; after he begins to open up this is your opportunity to get your answer by responding like ..
Do your Girlfriend if you have one supports you in this area or in your decision to do such and such
