iPod problem

Question Posted Wednesday July 5 2006, 7:38 pm

I just plugged in my iPod to my other computer and somehow, I exidenetly deleted all of my songs. I know I can't get them back, but I have other new songs on my iTunes and now I want to update it and put it on my iPod but when I click on update iPod it's gray and I can't click on it. How do I fix this so I can put new songs on my iPod? Do I have to register, and if so how? Thank you!

I may be wrong here but it sounds like you've put the music onto your ipod through itunes on one computer then connected it to another computer, which presumably had a blank version of itunes on? if this is the case im guessing the itunes setting were on automatic update. in which case as soon as you connect your ipod to the computer it updates your ipod to match your computer. so if you have deleted a song from itunes, it will delete it from your ipod. or if you add a song to itunes it will add it to your ipod. therefore if you connect your ipod to a blank itunes, without turning off the automatic update (i cant memo the exact place for this but if you go into help you should be able to find it) it will delete everything on your ipod so it is also blank.
if you can access the original computer, with the original songs on itunes, you should just be able to reconnect and it will add the songs back again. if you then want to take them to the other computer you can try using this software

to transfer everything on your ipod onto the computer.

with the new songs because they are on itunes they should be ok to transfer across to your ipod but i always find it is best to make sure you keep a backup file of all your music just incase you have problems.
im thinking that also the reason that you are having problems with the ipod updater is that, that piece of software is for updating the software on your ipod to keep it working well.Once you have updated it im pretty sure it stays grey and you cant click on it again unless you reset your ipod, or download a later version from the Apple website.

Usually when you first get your ipod it will ask you to register it and will come up with a quick and easy form to fill in so i would have thought you would have done that already to allow you to be able to use it properly so you should be ok now.

I hope this helps, but if you want any more information or help feel free to ask!

Well, you may have iTunes on Automatic update, and it won't let you add or delete songs. Mine did that and I couldn't control what went on my iPod unless things were checked. To see if its on automatic or not, go to Prefrences and go to the section on top and click the iPod. It will have check boxes and they will say something like, automatically update checked boxes and things like that on top, then below that, there is a box, below that there is another check box that says, Manually update iPod. Or something around there, it might even be in the box, I can't remember exactly but its there. This was on Macintosh. I'm not sure if its the same on PC's.
