CavieOwnsU2 answered Thursday June 29 2006, 10:02 am: I'm pretty sure it is because that is pretty much the last time you are going to be with people you've been with since kindergarden, or at least at a dance. Next year, you might keep in touch with your best friends, but it won't be the same. Heck, my friends and I took the last song at our eighth grade dance wicked seriously. It marks the end of, hopefully, a great year and just a time for everyone to enjoy themselves. [ CavieOwnsU2's advice column | Ask CavieOwnsU2 A Question ]

Alpha345 answered Thursday June 29 2006, 3:53 am: Because they think prom is a special occasion and a special dance.
Personally...I don't get prom. It's just a dance where people spend hundreds of dollars to enjoy themselves all in one night.
The last dance is like the "closing" of the dance. The last chance you get to dance with your significant "other" at prom. I don't really get it either, all I know is that it has some special meaning for couples and whatnot.
