prep school or regular school

Question Posted Sunday June 25 2006, 2:08 am

I've gone to a small prep school since 6th grade and i just finished 10th. I'm only 14, all my classmates are 16 (i skipped 1st grade). i've been struggling with being younger for a long time. after 6 years at one school i am ready to re-invent myself. my mother is a teacher at the school i go to and i get free tuition because of that. all my classmates are really rich and i have a hard time keeping up with them when we go places ($50 on dinner, that kinda thing). also i'm younger so i'm not as strong-therefore not as good at sports as the other girls in my grade. i am seriously thinking about switching to the local public school and starting as a 10th grader. there are a few thousand kids going there and it has kind of a bad/rough rep. i only know a few people there. but i would get my chance to be the same age as everyone else and become a new person. i just don't know if i can handle it. what should i think about before making this decision? it's a big one because if i switch my prep school won't take me back. any ideas on how i should decide, or opinions on which school i should go to, or anything at all would be really really appreciated.

Wellll i think that if you go to a public school, at least start back up in 11th grade. (do you really want to redo 10th grade at an easier school, just to take longer to graduate?) just keep going... you only have 2 more years of being the baby then in college you might find some other young ones (maybe even at the public school?) you can become a new person when you switch schools and go into 11th grade... I didn't think people cared about ages? a lot of people probably don't know. It seems like you really want a chance to start over so I think you should. if the prep school won't take you back well you only have 1-2 years left anyway. <3

Hey!
I think that you should follow your instincts. I dont know where you live or how bad your public schools are, but I dont think anyone should have to feel uncomfortable at school. School should be a place where you can feel accepted, not different. Kudos to you for being so smart to be able to skip grades. I say go with your instinct, i mean it's only 2 more years if you dont like it.
but here are some pro's and con's

-Pro's of Public School

New People then the ones you've been with all your life.
Being in the same grade as everyone else thats your age.
Probably easier work ( im not sure about your workload at prep scool, this could be a pro or con)
I'm guessing less school hours ( i have a friend who goes to a private school and hes there ALL day)
Not having your mom in your school lol i have an aunt who works in my school and she knows EVERYTHING
New Experiences.

- Cons of Public School

You may not like the kids you will be going to school with. I mean in 2nd grade its easy to accept a new kid, but as you get older it gets harder to fit in.
Im not sure what type of college you want to go to or if you even want to go to college but you have a beter chance of getting into an ivy league school from a prep school
The workload may be too easy, you've described that you are an intelligent girl, maybe going down to a lower grade wont be good for you, you could get easily bored and relearn things you know.
The food is prob. better at Prep School lol

there are tons of things to consider. I couldnt possibly tell you which way to choose because its an important time in your life as far as school goes because as soon as junior year starts its SAT time and schools prepare you differently.

Like i have mentioned plenty times before, follow your instinct or talk with your parents about it, they know your town and experiences with prep school and how the public schools are.

Just remember, if you go to public school, have fun be yourself and make new friends and enjoy it.
and if you stay in Private School, well College isnt too far away, you could even wait a year after you finish highschool to travel or make some money then start college when kids your age would be too.

Well whatever road you choose goodluck to you. I hope it all works out.
