I have a 2 year old guinea pig who is white and SO cute. He stinks up my whole bedroom and my mom wants to get rid of him. I love him and I just wanted to know if there was any special cages that they have or odor sprays. Also how much they cost. Thanks a bunch!
mike-and-morgan answered Sunday September 17 2006, 10:14 pm: I also have cavies, and I know they can get stinky at times :) Try using a different type of bedding. Yesterday's News, Carefresh, and other types of bedding absorb odors differently so it might help to experiment.
Another method you can use is fleece and towels, which is the method I use. Intead of loose bedding or shavings, layer two to three 100% cotton bath towels at the bottom of the cage, then place one layer of polyester fleece fabric on top. The fleece will wick away any moisture which will absorb into the towels. I have had less odor problems with this method. Sweep out any piggie poos when necessary, and at least once weekly wash the whole thing in hot water with vinegar to disinfect and kill the odors. You can find fleece remnants for cheap at the craft store, and towels at the thrift store (be sure to prewash everything first!) This method saves a lot of money as far as bedding costs and might work out better for you. [ mike-and-morgan's advice column | Ask mike-and-morgan A Question ]
isis answered Saturday June 24 2006, 6:16 am: You need to change his bedding 2-3 times a week, make sure he hasn't got any dirt clinging to him, and wash his toys and bowls etc thoroughly every time you clean the cage, just make sure that you rinse it all well. You can buy pet specific cleaning sprays and deodorisers that should help and also giving him sweet smelling bedding. As to cost, all these will depend on where you get them. If you are in US I have no idea about prices, sorry.
If you give him fresh fruit or veg, take out any he has not eaten after 2-4 hours.
If he doesn't mind, and he has personal hygiene issues, you could bath him, but if you have never done this before, he is likely to strongly object.
If your mum knows you are trying to do something to resolve this situation she may be more lenient about it.
I hope this helps and you are able to keep him, they are great pets. [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]
Sunshine answered Saturday June 24 2006, 2:56 am: It depends on what kind of bedding you're using. I've found that the cedar chip kind is the best because it has a woody smell. The trick is to use a thick layer of bedding, because it will absorb better. Make sure you clean the cage every 2-3 days. Don't just change the bedding. You have to wash the cage and all the pieces or toys and dishes with mild soap or dish detergent and hot water. Hope I helped. [ Sunshine's advice column | Ask Sunshine A Question ]
PunkieFreak4690 answered Saturday June 24 2006, 12:15 am: you can actually get pet shampoo and spray to reduce the odors in the cage. you can also get bedding for it that can absorb moisture from the pet. the shampoos and other care products are inexpensive (the ones I got for the guinea pig I once had was only 5 dollars each for a big bottle of shampoo and spray, and the bedding is cheap as well, it is only a few dollars for a big bag.
