i wake up with headaches

Question Posted Wednesday June 21 2006, 7:20 pm

16.Male Hey I'm not sure if it's becase of finals lately, but even before last week, I've found that I wake up and get a headache...really bad ones. When I go to sleep I usually don't have one, actually havn't at all. So why is this?

I have two pillows, a soft feather one that kinda sinks, and then one of those foam ones with the bend in them. I switch on and off, sometimes use both with a different one on top, but either way as soon as I wake up a headache hits me. Why is this? I can't take medicine on an empty stomach right away, so what should I do? Thanks.

I have that problem too. The reason it happens to me is because I have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is basically when I'm asleep, I stop breathing multiple times throughout the night, and my body has to pull me out of my sleep to wake up enough to gasp for air... Even though I don't remember waking up multiple times a night, it happens. I know this because I have a husband that sees (and hears) it happen. If it weren't for him, I probably wouldn't even know it.

It can cause me to wake up with a headache because of repeated lack of oxygen, and repeated interruption of sleep.

I don't know if this could be happening to you, but it might be worth mentioning to your doctor. Some people are more prone to it because they are born with a soft palate (the area in the back roof of the mouth where the sinus cavities end) and this can cause sleep apnea.

For more info, see this link:

In the short term, try arranging your pillows so that your head is tilted backwards as much as possible. The closer your chin is to your neck/chest, the worse any apnea will be.

I arrange a number of pillows, so that one is rather vertical and supporting my neck, while another is behind that one, horizontal, and thus not as tall... that way my head is tilted back as much as is comfortable.

Again, this may not be your problem, but I didn't see any other answers covering this possibility, and I wanted to make sure you knew about it.

Good luck.

its probably nerves for your exams and not the pillows, you may be so stressed that you arent sleeping well and thats giving you headaches. when you get up eat something like a bowl of cereal or toast, poptarts etc. take a painkiller and drink a glass of milk or water. hope it all works out!

You can take painkillers with a slice of bread and some milk. Try switching to only one pillow to put less stress on your neck. Where on your head does it hurt? Are you sensitive to light? If you're sensitive, it might be a migraine, so try drinking coffee. If the coffee makes it worse, though, it's not a migraine, and the tylenol should help.

If you've been having bad headaches that aren't typical for you, then you should see a Dr just to be on the safe side. You can take Tylenol on an empty stomach or a full stomach, doesn't matter. Ibuprofen or Aleve need to be taken with food. Usually just crackers & milk is enough, but follow the package directions.

I have allergies that didn't start until I was older and I used to wake up with headaches. More in the front of my head & around my eyes. I had to get one of those allergy free pillow covers, and I wash my sheets and pillow cases 2 times a week. I can't sleep with the window open either--and for sure a feather pillow would bother me. Also I found out if I drink a lot of water I am better too, even a slight amount of dehydration can cause a headache.

If the headache starts in the back of your neck and runs up the back of your head it could be your pillow or even stress.

Good luck :-)

Due to stress, some people tend to clench their teeth together, or bit hard and grind teeth, in their sleep, which can cause serious headaches upon awakening. I would suggest investing in a bite plate if the paint continues for more than another week.

Do not oversleep. Oversleeping is just as bad as not getting enough sleep. If you sleep too much or for too long you will wake up with a very woozy feeling and that will most likely turn into a headache. Our body tells us when it has had enough sleep. Listen to the cue and get up, do not succumb to the temptation to just lay in bed. Haha, weird, I know, but if you don't believe it, read number 37 on this site - [Link](Mouse over link to see full location).

This next site says it may be due to anxiety or depression. So maybe it's the finals stressing you out or something, [Link](Mouse over link to see full location). Well, good luck on the finals & the headaches. Goo luck, boy!

BROOKE :]

well i would wait until summer and like.. if a week after summer starts your still getting headaches than you can do one of these things..

- either go to a doctor
- take medicine for it at night so you wont have to take it on an empty stomache and you wont have to wake up with one in the morning..

good luck on your finals if your still taking them lol :)
