Read the package instruction leaflet carefully, and practice inserting a tampon during your period when your flow is moderate to heavy. The tampon should glide in easily. Lubricating the rounded end of the tampon applicator with a water-based gel for the first few tries can also be helpful. And by the way, don't use a petroleum-based jelly.
By the way that you said it was uncomfortable, then it was comfortable once you got in the water, my guess was your flow wasn't big enough to even wear a tampon.
Also for future reference about gettin in a pool on your period, you may not even have to wear anything. Menstruation doesn't really stop when a woman is in the water, but cold water does cause the muscles around that area to contract, and therefore, less blood can get out. You can demonstrate this by right before you get out of the shower, turn on the cold water and let it run on your lower abdomen, etc. When you get out, it will take about 10 minutes or so for your period to get back to its normal flow.

Its totally normal your body just needs to get use to something being there. Or possible when you put it in you didn't put it in far enouf.
