i know it...but everyone else dont...

Question Posted Sunday June 11 2006, 11:31 pm

okay well im 13/f and I KNOW i have a problem...#1 i have REALLY bad anger issues...for example once i punched a wall and fractured (spelling?) my fist all because i couldnt see my cousins for a week or so longer. i've also threw things around just because i was told something i believed in strongly about was wrong. i take temper tantrums and yes its immature but the thing is i dont really realize what im doing..when i have my little fits its like all this energy and i dont know its just weird, it freaks me out a little. OK now heres the thing as soon as im done takin my fits or throwin somethin punchin a wall i will b perfectly fine 5/10 mins later i will act like nothing ever happened sure i'll have a headache but i wont be pissy or anything. Im also like that throughout the day...i'll be really pissed off for god knows what 5mins later im the happiest person in the world...5mins after that im mad again or im sad and depressed or something and hey maybe theres nothing wrong with me but maybe there is and its starting to get annoying when im all happy and then im depressed....
- thanks and sorry if you think im crazy -

Dear Rosemarie,

I will probably say some things that you don't want to hear, but I promise it's not meant in a bad way, but hopefully will open your eyes to what's going on. It's good that you understand that you have a problem, it's the first step to getting better. I do think you realize what you are doing, because you told us all about it.

Remember, if whatever you are angry about is not going to matter 10 years from now, it's best to react in a calmer way. It's quite possible that you are more addicted to the adrenalin rush, than you are to the angry behavior. Our body's naturally have a "fight or flight" response to danger, but even when you are in no danger...you key yourself up so much you get a similar feeling. That's why you feel good afterwards. You need to find a more constructive outlet for your emotions..something that gives you that rush, but is not destructive. If you can change your reaction into something positive, you've solved the problem.

What I would suggest is trying a fairly intense physical activity, such as jogging, bike riding, jump rope, trampoline jumping (or whatever you like) each time you feel that "need for speed" coming on. (in otherwords the need for a release of your frustration). If you do this activity on a daily basis you will be less likely to snap when you feel angry.

Try these suggestions, because it "can't hurt"

I suggest you talk to someone about this,
other than this advice column.
Because we cant go through the screen and help you deal, unfortuently.
But I suggest talking to a counsular, or finding an adult you trust to talk to.
Especially if you know you have a problem such as this.

well my brother is like that,

he got diagnosed EBD
which is emotional behavior disorder.

well my parent are stupid and didn't get him the help he proabably needed, now my brother is a complete idiot,

i'm not saying thats what you have, but maybe get your self tested or something,

talk to one of your parents about it, and just see if they can like schdule you and apptment, and if they say nothings wrong, just keep telling them, thats it's bothering you and you want to get it checked out.

well i hope i helped

Go see a therapist or a counselor, you might have anger management issues or symptoms of / personality disorder (your mood wings seem bipolar). Don't take my word for it though, go see a professional please.
What's important is that you can acknowledge that you have a problem, that's the hard part.
