Advice by pharmacist/Chemist/Dr etc please

Question Posted Wednesday June 7 2006, 4:08 am

Hi
Thanks for your time.
I have Tinnitus and am always careful with medications. I have just had a flu vaccination and I see that it contains a minute amount of neomycin.
I know in its full antibiotic dosage this substance can be harmful but in the small amount in the vaccine can it harm my ears?
The Dr says know but wanted to double check for future reference and peace of mind.

Thanks so much for your help
PS Do you know a good website that lists drugs and harmful effects on Tinnitus?

Ask your pharmacist for last year's PDR. They often give them away for free. It will list the adverse effect thousands of drugs, and will be a much better reference than the interent.

What are the possible side effects of neomycin?
decreased hearing, ringing in the ears, or a feeling of fullness in the ears;
*hearing loss or loss of balance due to ear problems; You may not be able to take neomycin, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have this condition.

The following list of DOs and DON'Ts can help lessen the severity of tinnitus:

Avoid exposure to loud sounds and noises.
Get your blood pressure checked. If it is high, get your doctor's help to control it.
Decrease your intake of salt. Salt impairs blood circulation.
Avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea, cola, and tobacco.
Exercise daily to improve your circulation.
Get adequate rest and avoid fatigue.
Stop worrying about the noise. Recognize your head noise as an annoyance and learn to ignore it as much as possible.
