I entered the field in 1996 and am still here ten years later. I got started by reading the Dummies books. No one believes me though.

The best way to learn is by sitting next to some one who already knows how to do it and watch them and asking questions. Then start your own project and consult with them when you get stuck.

You can also look at the web pages that are out there and study the HTML source by right clicking on the page.

You can click file>save and save the web page to your hard drive. Then make changes to the source HTML with NotePad and see what happens to the page when your load/refresh it.

If you really want to get good at HTML, XML, Java, CSS, and other web design languages, I'd suggest buying or borrowing books on those topics.

You can find them anywhere. Barnes & Noble, Books-a-million, the local library, etc.

Also, there are a few websites like lissaexplains.com and peachie.nu which offer already made codes along with tips and hints for making your website better.

Suggested first hosts include geocities, hostultra, and freewebs.

If you need any additional help or explanation, feel free to ask!

Try starting out with a myspace. That gives you great design ideas and more experience on how to make a real web site better! You can make your own layouts and be creative! Hope this helps!

This is how I started.

My friend got me started with webdesign, but I can help you out.

Lissaexplains.com is a GREAT website. The website is run by Lissa, of course, who takes you through a step by step guide on how to do different HTML and stuff. It's a huge help.

Also, go on google, and type in beginners html or something like that, and you should get a lot of links.

I started out by making my sites on freewebs.com It's a free web host and you have a good amount of space to start out with.

Good luck!
