Stories...

Question Posted Thursday June 1 2006, 7:58 pm

I have the urge to write a story for some reason, but I can't think of anything people would want to read. I'm thinking of like a chapter book, something I can make a summer project out of. But the problem is, I always have problems figuring out what to write about! I want it to be from the point of a teenage girl, something I can relate to being, and then have an interesting plotline that follows. Something about going through a hard time. It could have to do with relationships, but also something beyond that too. Set in the present time. So tell me, what would you guys like to read??

BTW, I am good at descriptive writing.

I will rate high and thanks so much in advance!

Man. I did that in the 5th grade, and it took me months. My story was about a girl in the future. ._.

The easiest thing to do is to pick an interesting event that happened in your life, change the characters, twist the story up, and add to it. That's what I did a few weeks ago, and I have a pretty good idea for a book. (Except mine's gonna be a graphic novel)

Good luck with your story. :D

What I read runs the gamut, basically everything except romance novels. Most recent reads were the Dark Tower series by Steven King, and Zorro by Isabel Allende.

When I write, I usually start with a character. I try to imagine them, what they do, how they live, then create the people around them. I usually leave the plot for last, and make something that works with the characters.

Another thing you could do is to create a sort of fictionalized version of events in your life. Create a different character, and put her through what you go through. How would she handle it?

Try something with a unique character or perspective- a mute girl, a baby, someone in a coma- or situation. Stay away from the typical characters (blonde mean cheerleader, nerd girl, jock boy, drama queen- basically all the high school stereotypes)- and create real people and settings. The rest will come when you have a beginning.

Here is something that helps me, and has been used by countless famous authors. Stream of consciousness. Take a pen and a spiral notebook, and write every word that comes to mind in the order that it comes. Don't worry about grammar, spelling, or punctuation. Write what you think. It helps if you do it in a place that is comfortable for you. You might also try drinking water and stretching beforehand, to clear your mind. It's also best to write from your personal experiences. Don't write about going through a hard time if it's something you haven't been through. Don't worry about it being bad or good, the only way to get good is to do it. If you want, you can write fanfiction. If you don't know what that is, it's making your own stories with the characters and settings from something else. Many authors don't like people to do this, but I know that J.K.Rowling and Tamora Peirce fully encourage it. One thing I do is one-sentence challenges. I pick a certain couple, and I'm given fifty one-word themes. Then I write a sentence relating to each word. Sometimes they link up, other times they are one story. It's also fun to write little 100-word stories, which you can also link up into one big story broken into 100-word sections. Writing is not easy. You are going to fail many times before you write something halfway decent. But don't stress--it's supposed to be fun!

*facepalm* I just realized that that wasn't your question, but I'm leaving it up because it's some of the best advice I've ever given. Okay. What I like to read. Well, it varies. I like classic novels, like "Jane Eyre", "Great Expectations", and "My Antonia". I like things set in historical settings, espcially when they're in Asia. I modern young adult books, such as "Flipped" and the "Gossip Girls" series. And I love love. I'm a huge fan of sappy romance. But don't try to copy the way other people write. Read a lot of different things, and they'll automatically influence your writing. And don't try to cater to what other people want. Write for yourself first, and if others like it...good for them!

Your fellow writer,
Tasuki ;-)

I think its wonderful that you want to write and spread your creativity through words. I love reading books, so inspiring authors are people I look up too, but anyways, I'm going to tell you to go with your feeling. i know it may seem hard, but think of your dream life. Then narrow it down to whats realistic but still great, so say your dream life is living on a yacht in Hawaii, well just make it more real by making your character live in something like a mansion in California. So basically take your dream life make it something that other girls can relate too and then add in typical highschool drama. Or more serious drama, like family members dying, drunk driving, aids things that are real and people would be interested in reading. And if your looking to write books other then drama, then create a fantasy world, think back to willy wonka etc. Use your whole imagination, idk make ducks purple, things like that. For example you could have a boy find watch that takes him to another world. (just an example)

Well anywayss, I hope I helped. And good luck with your writing.

Just remember, its all up to you, you get to make up people and have them be exactly how you want. Have fun with it!!

I personally am a fantasy fan, but I love stories that do not concentrate too much on detail but rather have a large and extensive plot. :)
