Languages :D

Question Posted Tuesday May 23 2006, 2:22 am

I have an odd obsession with languages. I get very excited about learning them but do you think it's a bad idea to learn more than one-two at a time?

I'm going to take German next year so I'm trying to remember the basics and such.

My boyfriend is taking Spanish and so I am also trying to learn some of that.

But before any of this... I was already studying Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Russian.

I love all languages.. But I'm pretty sure it's not good to learn all at the same time..

So which ones do you think is easier to learn and I should stick with for now?

I have your same obsession, only I have very little time to actually study them on my own.

I am a second year German student and before that I had studied latin in my own time.

I would suggest latin. It may "seem" dead, but you can find alot of practicle uses for it. Many of the languages you listed are descended from the original latin language and many words in English are from latin.

Also I would suggest Spanish, simply because (if your in America) you will need it for basic communication in about 5 years, which is sad to me.

That and you can simply keep a very small pace on any language you want to learn, but put more time and effort in 1 or 2 primary languages. So you get the expierence of all of them, while stil learning what you need to learn from your primaries.

I don't keep much tabs on the modern languages, I like dead or ancient languages better. Which is why I put some focus into learning ancient latin and greek. But that's just me.

I hope I helped, and good luck with your studies. I'm glad you really enjoy the languages.

It is of great benefit to be able to communicate in a wide range of languages even if it is only basic. I found that learning German was quite easy but I did it years ago and never had to use it. I also learnt French at school and I am able to make myself understood in France. You have a very special talent and you should exploit it to the maximum. I wish you the very best of luck for a very interesting future.

Hey! I love languages too! Do as much as you can, and only cut back if you feel overwhelmed. When you get older, you won't have time to learn nearly as much so do as much as you want (and can) now.

Hey there is nothing wrong with wanting to learn languages. Um but I do think you should pace yourself. I would say take two at a time and see how it goes. Make sure they are different so you don't start getting confused. But if it becomes to much maybe trim down to one. However I admire your desire to learn languages I want to but I lack the time to devote to it.
