Is there an effect when you do situps on a bed? My friend told me it wont even matter or have an effect at all...

Your friend is right and sit ups are useless enough as it is on a floor. Do crunches instead.

it will definitely have some effect, your best bet is to get a mat or a rug and do them on the floor instead. a hard surface will make it more effective. trying looking up some pilates moves that are like situps but slightly variated that will work different parts of your abs.
