I think i eat too much

Question Posted Sunday May 7 2006, 5:35 pm

So.. wow this is kinda embarassing..
Since I'm the one usually giving advice, and now I really need some! Please help :)

okay, well I heard that when people are stressed/depressed or stuff like that they can either start eating a lot, or eating less and getting an eating disorder.

Well today was really bad, and I just want to keep eating food, and I dont know why, I feel hungry, but I dont want to get fat. I'm upset, but ahh how do I control this?

How often do you feel like this? Is there an underlining problem that needs to be addressed? If you know you are getting stressed out by what life is throwing your way, find a way to destress... something that will take your mind off wanting food. Different things work for different people, but what works for me, is either playing with Paint Shop Pro or sitting on the sofa with a colouring book. Destressing is probably the key. Sounds like comfort eating to me, which is no good for anyone, but is understandable. Just try to remember to eat in moderation. It's not what you eat that can make you fat, its how much of it you eat in the first place.

What you're talking about sounds like comfort eating. It's not necessarily that people develop eating disorders as a result of feeling stressed or depressed. It's more that food is something they can turn to when things get a little too much. As a result, some people binge eat like this on a regular basis and it can make them overweight.

One day really won't make much of a difference, if any at all so please don't worry about it too much. If you have had a bad day, the worry about that will only make things worse.

Now, I don't know what happened today that was so awful and I don't know if you normally have someone to turn to in times like this but if you aren't doing so already, you might want to consider writing in a diary? I know it might seem a little pointless to a lot of people but the reason many people comfort eat is because they can't get their feelings out to anyone and writing a diary can help with this. Nobody else needs to read it so you have complete privacy to write whatever you like.

If you are already doing this and it isn't helping or if you are suffering from days like this on a very regular basis, you might want to consider speaking to your school and seeing if they can arrange an in school counsellor, so that you have someone who is completely impartial with whom you can discuss your problems. You don't need to worry about them telling your parents, because they aren't allowed to.

At the end of the day, you really need to speak to someone so that you can offload some of your emotions and some of what is going on in your life.

i don't think you have an issue with emotional eating. i think you're just having "one of those days" where you're just hungry. i have those occasionally.. i think everyone does. it could be PMS too... a lot of people i know seriously pig out! so really, it's nothing to be concerned about. if it goes on for more than a week straight, then you might have to figure out what's wrong. BUT it could just be that you are growing and need more food and that's normal. <3

well yes its true that some people resort to food when they are depressed or sad. but that doesnt have to be you. when your sad about something, dont think of eating as a comfort for you as many others do. pick something else. maybe something you enjoy. is there something that your really good at? try resorting to that instead. just because you are depressed and eat alot one day doenst necessarily mean that your going to get fat unless you are sad a whooole lot. to keep in shape, the only things you need to stay on track with doing and getting in daily excerise, and eating healthy. thats all. i hope i helped much luck to you!

Well, most people have days where they eat a lot. I know I do, anyway. Yes, it is often triggered by sadness, but usually it doesn't turn into anything major. If you see yourself doing it alot, like every day, then maybe it isn't good. You should probably talk to a parent, or something. You mentioned eating disorders, and let me tell you, they are NOT the way to go. One day won't also get you fat, so you don't have to worry about that. Maybe you should also try focusing your energy on to something else, instead of being hungry. Like, something to do, probably away from the kitchen. I hope this helps!

definitely keep eating, dont think about your weight. the last thing you want is an eating disorder because it scars you for life. just ignore the fact that your body doesnt want to eat and force food down because if you dont do it now your gonna regret it later =/
