Question Posted Thursday April 20 2006, 2:34 pm

(f/17)k so lots of people think this is weird, but i am a lesbian and still want to have my OWN children. i am in the most amazing relationship, we are very open and honest and she clearly said she wants kids, but doesnt want to be pregnant, but she thinks it is a beautiful thing to watch(see the belly growing, etc)and we have lots of plans for the future, we even picked a name for a boy, DAMIEN and the thing i have to ask is...
how would i get pregnant without a man?
ive heard about INVITRO-FERTILIZATION..but how does that work??

This is exciting because my aunt, had the very same dream as you do. Her girlfriend Janet and herself decided they wanted to have a baby together. My aunt, has been a lesbian all of her life, but saw no obstacles to get past in this task. She and her gf picked a close male friend of theirs whom they've been friends with their whole lives, and asked if he would give the male sperm to make the baby. He agreed and donated the sperm to a bank for her to use. She was articially inseminated wit his sperm. Just her luck the she actually had twins! It was amazing, and a very bright idea.

HEY! Did you get the Damien from Mean Girls???? Because that would be cool. If not, its still cool. Anyway, In Vitro Fertilization is when the man's sperm and the womans egg is combined in a laboratory dish. That would not work since you have a girlfriend and not a boyfriend. I suggest getting a sperm donation.

invitro is when they take the "egg" out of the woman and insert the sperm into it and then put it back into the woman. i would personally go with another type, articifial insemination (of which i am a product of actually, (mom is a single parent-never married, and the donor is unknown)). i am extremely happy she did it, cus without it i wouldnt be here. sorry this answer is more on the emotional effects of it rather than how it actually works. but all im saying that babies made in any form are a miracle, and without artificial insemination, i wouldnt be here.

Oh wow, I want my little boys name to be Damien too. I am in love with that name.

Anyways, Invitro-Fertilization, you take a sperm from a male, & put it in the female carrier.

Good luck with your relationship.

You have several options for trying to get pregnant.

First, you can have a 'known' donor. This can be a friend or relative. Essentially, you need access to their sperm soon after they ejaculate - you and your partner would then insert it to you while at home. This could happen with a syringe, turkey baster, or other implement.

Second, you could have an unknown donor. This would be someone from a sperm bank. Your options would be to have it delivered to your home and then inseminate yourself, or to be inseminated at a clinic.

These options are the easier and less expensive, and what many people would try before invitro. This process involves harvesting your eggs (removing them from your body), mixing them with sperm, and then implanting the zygote into your womb. This procedure has a low success rate and often needs to be repeated.

The first two could require you to pay for the sperm, but essentially it's quite similar to anyone trying to get pregnant. When it was closer to the time, you would begin to monitor your periods, when you ovulate, etc - to determine your most fertile time. A doctor would be able to give you other healthy tips that could optimize your chances of conception.

Best of luck!

You might be thinking of in vitro fertilization, but that's actually not what you want to do. In in vitro fertilization (which literally means "fertilization in glass"), an egg is extracted from a woman and combined with sperm in a test tube; the fertilized egg(s) are then re-implanted back into the mother, or a host-mother.

The process is VERY expensive and physically wearing; the egg-extraction process isn't easy, from what I've heard.

Instead, you probably just want artificial insemination. The technique is very old; it was first used on a human in the 1460s (that's not a typo), and we've used it with animals for even longer than that. Sperm from a donor (a male donor, of course) is placed inside a female's uterus or cervix. Things progress naturally from there.

It's not uncommon, and shouldn't be at all painful (or not much more painful than ordinary heterosexual intercourse, which I realize you may not have experienced). Sperm can be a bit expensive, depending on what characteristics you require in a donor. I don't know if it still exists, but there used to be a bank of sperm from Nobel Prize winners. That was quite expensive, I imagine.

Of course, some lesbians simply put up with hetero intercourse with a sympathetic (and healthy) male friend, suffering for the sake of a baby, but it sounds as if you don't want to do that. It's the cheapest method, though. Of course it would be wise to consult a lawyer beforehand and draw up some sort of legal agreement with the donor, relinquishing parental rights and responsibilities or whatever seems appropriate.

In any case, I have to tell you: babies are WONDERFUL. My life wasn't complete until I had one. :D

Good luck!

go to one of those places that have a sperm donations, one of you will have to be pregnant.
or maybe you can consider adoption, though you like to see the process of watching a baby grow.
