A good trick for getting your muscles used to doing a split, is to watch television sitting on the floor with your legs spread open as far as they will go, and sit like that, you'll feel your leg muscles stretching and pulling, it will help your legs become more flexible. Practice it a little everyday, going down a little further each time until you are all the way down, just make sure you stretch whatever you do & that alone will help a lot! good luck!

But seriously, if you push yourself too much and force yourself to do it, you might end up with permanent muscle tear. I don't think you want that.
All you have to do is to constantly stretch out and do your splits. Try going down as low as you can and hold the position. The more you do it, the more your muscles will get accustomed to the "idea" and relaxes more and more everytime you do it. You will be doing full splits before you know it. It takes constant practice. If you are of a young age, it'll be easier for you.
Look, if i can do a full split at the age of 23 and with thighs as thick as tree trunks, so can you. Just be consistent with your practices.
