My fish looks sick or something!

Question Posted Thursday March 30 2006, 8:10 pm

I need help. My fish, Snowflake looks hurt and stuff. I think another fish might've damaged him, but that doesn't matter, becuase I think he is dieing. He sits at the top of the fish bowl, not dead, but almost as if he was. He has small darkish red stains at the top of his scales, as if he was bleeding, and a very small part of his top fin looks somewhat like it was bitten or something. I went to Neopets for help, and a nice girl was nice enough to help me. She said that he might have a type of illness called "Ick", but I want to know if it is true. She said that there is also a medicine for it, but I just want to make sure that it is "Ick", so that I won't waste my money on something worthless. Please help me.

If you love your pet then buy the medicine!!! Plus take your fish to a fish store or a vet.

Psh, that girl doesn't know fish!! When a fish has ick, it will have white spots on it's fins/body, not red. Not exactly sure what it is, but if the fish is still alive, seperate it from the others and put some antibacterial stuff in the water, which you can get at fish stores. You should also ask a person that works at a fish store of the possible illness your fish could have.

Is the fish still alive today? Just wondering. As another reader said ick is tiny white spots usually noted first on the fins. When a fish is sick it's fins sometimes look dull--and as you described, but thats not ick.

If you don't have a separate tank buy a breeder tank and place the sick fish inside of that (inside the main tank).

Check online or at the pet store to see if the breeds you have or the amount of fish you have are compatible. (some should be in schools of 3-5).

If the fish has expired take some water from the tank to the pet store and have them check ph and ammonia levels so you can correct this before the other fish get sick or before adding new fish.

Usually ick starts to appear as white spots, not red. He was probably getting attacked by the other fish (It depends what type of fish he is) Best choice is to remove him from the tank if thats whats happeneing. If you wanna futher cheak the symptoms of ick just go to google and type "Ick" in, im sure you'll get many results.
