Unmanagable hair

Question Posted Wednesday March 15 2006, 5:33 pm

My hair is unmanagable.
Even when I straigten it, it is all frizzy and poofy. Its so frustrating.
I hate it.
I heard on advicenators someone telling someone else you can get your hair permanantly straightened in a salon for like 75 bucks. I don't want to get in Japanese straightened because it costs a lot of money. If I get it done at a salon for 75 bucks, how long will it last?
Does it really work?

I wouldn't get it chemically straightened. My hair is naturally curly and crazy ala Don King. Ugh. I did the straightening thing once. It caused a lot of breakage and my hair looked like hay. Maybe I just had a bad experience, but it's enough to keep me from doing it again. Remember, any chemical processes down to your hair are going to weaken the shaft a bit.

If your hair is dry, deep condition once a week, and leave it in for about 15 mins or so. Put a hot towel over your cap in order to get the treatment to penetrate. There's times I'll sleep with the treatment in with a showercap on my head.

I also use a straightening iron. If you go that route, make sure you get one that is ceramic to reduce breakage and damage. Do a blowout before you straighten it for best results. Make sure you use a protective spray before hand meant for heat styling. Don't aim the dryer TOO close to your hair..I know, you sort of have to to keep it from blowin all over the place and looking crazy, but if you aim too closely you'll cause damage. If you decide to wear your hair naturally, use a diffuser and use frizz controlling serums. They add shine and definitely help with manageability.

Hey,

A cheap way to look after your hair and make it do what you want is to put conditioner on in the shower & brush it whilst its in.. then wash it.. it makes it easy to manage & it does what you want it to do after! If it doesnt work.. atleast it didnt cost you alot to try out!

hey!
yepp, they work but,it only lasts about 2 months and then you'll have to spend a LOT of money again (1000 $-4000$)
go for a ceramic.
They are the best kind i recommend Chi,because it is the real thing and it works great. Also try buying that frizz-ease stuff from chi,or other brands.Even though a straightener like chi costs,it lasts a long time(7 yrs +),is great on your hair, and adds shine to it.Also,my hair is wavy, and what i do if after i take a shower i flip my hair upside down and blowdry it with a paddle brush, from root to the end.It blowdrys almost compleatly straight :) (my hair dresser taught me that). You could also try getting a straitener that straitens your hair when it is wet.I hope i helped!
goood luck!

Haha you sound like me. :) That happens to me.

But anyways, I kept getting my hair permed for about a year & a half but then I decided to get it straightened. My mom bought me a straightener, but it just made my hair really frizzy & it didn't completely get rid of the curls.

So, she bought a straightening kit. It's like a perm, but without curlers & it does the complete opposite; it straightens. It only takes about a half hour or so and it doesn't get frizzy & lasts a long time.

Try it. You can probably find a kit at Walmart or Target.

:)

Try a ceramic flat iron. My friend's hair is CRAZY, and it worked perfectly. Plus, they're only $30.

Well I read over the person's advice before me and i disagree...I got a "relaxer" (chemical straightener) put on my hair back in November and it actually DID straighten my hair and made it alot softer....of course when i wash my hair and it air dries it's still a bit poofy but absolutely nothing like it was before and the curl is completely gone...You'll have to straighten it (with a straightener) to make it smooth and sleek but it is deffinately worth it...and a relaxer lasts until your hair starts to grow back out...and incase you decide to get it done...after you get it straightened you have to wait about 2-3 days before getting it wet (sweat can also mess it up) so you want to be careful about that...but darlin...it is TOTALLY worth it :)

Ah, I'm so happy I found your question! Well, I have extremely unmanagable hair as well but I've learned to tame it with a straightening iron. Japenese straightening runs about $1500-3000 so unless you have some money racked up in the bank, I don't reccomend it. Other chemical straightening systems (true, there is one for about $75) don't exactly straighten, they just tame it a bit but dry it out drastically. I reccomend splurging on a $100 straightening iron. They work great (trust me, if it works on my hair, it'll work on yours!)
