I don't know for sure because my hair won't hold curl to save my life lol- but couldn't you do the loose ringlets- then like pull them apart and shake your hair around to let it fall a little? sorry if that's stupid- I tried... TAKE CARE!

you can get this certain type of hair bryer that has a round nosel at the end and when you dry your hair you blow it up instead of down

well scrunchy curls are usually like that because of the gel. If you're worried about buildup I'd try something like Herbal Essences Smoothing creme, I've found it works sort of like gel in terms of how it makes your hair look. But it doesn't always last as long as a gel however it all depends on what you do (running or biking as opposed to sitting on the couch) and your hair type. Also, the extra hold gel, also from Herbal Essences, doesn't build up much, and has a slightly "crunchy" effect on your hair, which you either love or hate :]

If you still don't want to use gel, I'd try either braiding your hair in small sections and twisting it as you go and leave it in overnight, or use a curler intended for tight curls. I have been blessed/cursed with naturally curly hair, therefore I've never actually CURLED my hair. But I know every beauty supply store sells them, so I'd ask someone who works there. or ask a friend who curls their hair. Or you could use a curling iron that isn't really skinny (like a 1", or combine two or three thicknesses in your styling routine)

actually there is a product called 'spoodles' that is made by scrunchi .. they are soft noodle like things you can put in your hair overnight and in the morning you'll have perfect soft wavy curls. you can buy them at any beauty supply store or supermarket. check it out!
