Some say that St. John's Wort works best for anxiety, but with any medicine there are side effects. In order to find a supplement that is best for you, seek out an alternative medicine friendly physician. Good luck!

Herbs are very soothing and often calm our body systems. Personally, I think they work really well. Here are some that I would recommend for anxiety attacks:
Herbs known as adaptogens, such as ginseng, (Panax ginseng), wild yam (Dioscorea villosa), borage (Borago officinalis), licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), milk thistle (Silybum marianum), and nettle (Urtica dioica) may help to alleviate anxiety attacks. Other herbs that may be helpful include:

Chamomile: (Matricaria chamomilla) This herb is often associated with relaxation. It may be helpful in reducing anxiety.

Kava: (Piper methysticum) Kava is helpful for mild anxiety.

St John's Wort: (Hypericum perforatum) St John's Wort has been used for many years to help promote an overall sense of well being and reduce stress and anxiety.

Supplements: As with herbs, check with your health care provider before introducing any new supplements to your diet.

5-HTP: (5-hydroxytryptophan) This supplement is a mood lifter that may help to promote restful sleep and decrease anxiety.

Inositol: Inositol may be helpful in decreasing anxiety with long term use.

Different people react to herbal remedies in different ways. You may have to experiment with different herbs and formulas to find the one that's right for you. Try checking your local library for "New Encyclopedia of Herbs & Their Uses", "Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine: The Definitive Home Reference Guide to 550 Key Herbs with all their uses as Remedies for Common Ailments", or "The Green Pharmacy: The Ultimate Compendium of Natural Remedies from the World's Foremost Authority on Healing Herbs." All of these books will give you information on various herbal remedies and how they work. You can also try your local health food or herbal store. The workers can generally point you in the right direction. As with any medicine, I highly suggest checking with your doctor before taking them. Some herbs can interact with medications or worsen certain conditions.

Although they didn't work for me, I know people that swear by Kalms, which is available at Health Food shops. Another thing that I've heard is excellent for light depression is St. Johns Wort (although you can't take this if you're on the pill). Hope this helps, and if any of these don't work I suggest you see your doctor.
