when suicide is threatened

Question Posted Thursday February 2 2006, 8:19 pm

What do you do if a friend threatens to commit suicide, then a few days later they refuse to discuss it any further and insist they were "kidding"? My roommate did this and I tried to get help for her but she laughs at me and says she was "kidding" and I "don't know how to take a joke" but I know perfectly well that she had been serious. I know because the day she threatened to do it, I asked if she was in earnest and she was like, "Yes *sniffle* I feel like...*sob* ...I just want to die..."

And now suddenly she was "kidding." I just don't know what to do about it -- it seems like if I got a shrink to talk to her or something, she would tell the same story to him.

Whenever a friend is even joking about suicide, it should NOT be taken lightly. They need help right away- make sure you tell a parent/guardian about their thougts or jokes even if they swear you not to tell anyone. It is a matter of life and death. It isn't even normal for someone to joke about suicide.
I hope everything works out. :)

Depression is an off an on thing. After some people have an "episode," they often "wake up" and wonder what the heck they were thinking. Talk to your room-mate about the fact that they're quite likely to feel like that again. Ask them what their plan is in that case, if they can hold their head if it gets that bad again. Their answer may be unreliable though, and you're in the unfortunate place of having to keep an eye on them. Is there someone else you can alert to the possible issue? It may turn your room-mate against you, but it may be your only option. Use your best judgement; they don't need to suffer alone, and you don't need to watch them suffer alone.
