Martial Arts

Question Posted Saturday January 28 2006, 5:51 pm

I'm taking a self-defense class at my school right now, and I LOVE it. I've never really thought about taking Martial arts before, but now I really want to. Would it be weird for me to start now? Do they have adult classes? I'm 16, so I don't know if that's too late or something. Also, which type of Martial arts would be the best?

yes, you can go to any defense school and they'll take you. I had a buddy back in high school who was into that, he had FBI agents in his class. as far as styles, hapkido is supposed to be a pretty good one, i haven't heard much on its form though. as a member of the armed forces, I prefer grappling and chokeholds. its sorta like jujitsu, using pressure points to defeat your opponent's will to continue. its really flexible, so its good against structured styles. try looking up army combatives, they're more geared towards one-on-one and killing the opponent, so if tou just wanna ninja kick the shit out of somebody, its not for you

It certainly is not too late. Many people start when they are middle aged. As for which is the best, depends a little bit on what you are after. Ju-jutsu is the one I would recommend for a number of reasons: Its not too hard on you (some martial arts have really intense training schedules); it is very practical usually and you can use many of the self defence techniques rather quickly; its not dependant on physical strength much; and finally it has one of the best records in full contact competitions (beating out most of the martial arts that people typically regarded as effective).
Whatever you choose, have fun!

I was about 11 or 12 when I took a karate class, and i wasn't the only one in the family taking it. My mom & dad both signed up, and we learned a lot! So no, it's not too late at all. There's plenty of older kids that take those classes anyways..
hope that helps a litle

It's never too late! Pretty much anywhere they teach martial arts, they have adult classes! I think now is a great time for you to start.
