french food In the 1700s what did the french use on their bread. and what else did they eat besides bread (the more specific the better)

Actually, they might have used that on meat...i'm not sure...
They DID use margerine, though. In fact, that was invented by the french as an alternative to butter, because real butter was used as grease for something involved with making weapons, and was in short supply. ]
