dark is always a fearfull one. because you can't see anything. but fear is something happens with in you. whatever, whether fear, happy, joy, etc can happen within you only. let me tell you something. fear- in dark, how it comes, may be you have imaginating or visuallising . what ever it is , where it can come from. only from your mind. your mind is a tool, which can register everything that sees. so it can reproduce or create the same thing either in your dream or whenever you don't have control over your mind. in the dark, normally, mind gets some time to locate what is there or where is that, due to normal visualisation problems. in that fraction of second mind creates so many things with in you, and fear is a result. these thing can be overcome by little practice of simple things.
you can chant -- but your logical mind will have distrust upon that. even if you chant, you will thing will it work so it normally will not yield result. you can take yoga- a scientific approach to control your mind and body, to explore your true potential. i am a practioner of isha yoga for the last 12 years. as you said all this things stopped within me and now i can live in dark even in an unknown place happily. this will definitely can help you. if you wish visit the website www.ishafoundation.org which is the foundation who offers the program in world wide in the presence of living master sadhguru jaggi vasudev. you can search this in internet also. it is simple thing and you can come out of if very easily.

hey ..:) ok im 17 and im still afraid of the dark .hehe..but its because also when i was a kid in ma room i had bad experince but youll get over it step by step. sleep with the hall way light on and close your lights and leave the door half way open! youll usually get used to it by the end of the week! but trust me it should work. in my religion before going to bed theres this surah ( and excerpt in the Quran) where when we read 70,000 angels protect us from the time you sleep till you get up and i swear im not making it up! so after knowin that i say it now every night and i sleep well and i dont get that scared ...trust me with the hall way thing it will work
bye!

It's a common phobia, even people who are 40 have this phobia. Iam willing to bet that even if you don't want to admit it, scary movies do influence this in some kind of way, and thats the reason why we watch them and directors are paid to make them...to give us a thrill and make us think. Case in point- If you ask a whole bunch of people you know if the reason why they don't sleep with their foot hanging off the end of the bed is because they think someone is going to grab it in the dark or someone will not look under their bed in the dark because they think something is under there, you'll probably be surprised to how hear many people think this is true even though we all know it's just make believe. Tell me, have YOU stood in a dark bathroom in the middle of the night and said "Bloody Mary" 3 times into the mirror?..probably not and it's your subconscious which is scared of this because it's a legend. Sleep with a night light or the TV on, but do you think that a TV light is going to stop Freddy Kreuger from coming? :-)

sounds like a common phobia. you don't have to be embarrassed, a lot of people have phobias, and many of them are scared of much more unreasonable things. if you really want to get rid of it, the best thing you could do is see a specialist. phobias are not that hard to cure, it just takes a few visits to a therapist. getting rid of a phobia on your own is not quite possible.

i completely understand. i am afraid of the dark. and i am also 15. most people know about my fear. i carry a mini flashlight in my purse everywhere i go. it took me a while to realize that it isn't a big deal. everyone has fears. ours just happens to be the dark. so no worries, just don't be ashamed of it. i'm not. and i'm extremely happy with myself.

You just need to realize that everything is exactly the same in the dark as it is with the lights on. Try turning your light on and looking around at everything, then turn the light off and look at all the same things you just looked at. It's no different, just a little harder to see!:) There's really nothing to be afraid of. Also, if you have a sleep button on the remote control to your tv, you could just set the timer on it before you go to sleep so it won't be completely dark when you're tryin to go to bed and the timer will go off soon so it's not on all night!
Hope that helps!
