The expression is actually relatively new, historicaly speaking, according to this english historian at [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

You don't really have to knock on wood just because your friends say to. The tree fairies / tree gnomes aren't going to get angry for your lack of knocking, rest assured.

Ok, Let's say you don't like a girl and she falls on the ground and you start laughing histarically. Well, you would say knock on wood, then go knock on a tree/table/whatever is wood, and this is suppose to make it so that you won't end up falling because you were laughing at her. It's kind of like making sure you don't get any negative Karma back. I Hope I Helped.

well the sayin "knock on wood" is supposed to stop you from gettin jinx. like if i said "oh i havent been sick in years" then most likey i wud prolly get sick.. but if i knocked on wood, its supposed to keep me from jinxing myself and getting sick....its more like a superstition thing

It's a superstition. When people say "Oh, I never got into a car accident" or something like that, people say knock on wood. They think by saying 'knock on wood' it will prevent them from getting into a car accident. It's like jinxing yourself.

Its a superstition where people knock on wood so they don't get jyxned. Like for an example my friend broke her leg and I said 'I never broke any of my bones' and then I would knock on wood so it doesn't happen. <-- Thats probably hard to get. Try this.

Imperialistic answered Friday December 30 2005, 3:01 am:
Meaning - The phrase voiced by people who rap their knuckles on a piece of wood hoping for good luck. In the UK the phrase 'touch wood' is used.
Origin - May be the association that wood and trees have with good spirits in mythology, or with the Christian cross.

Some examples would be:
"I hope I get the part in the play, knock on wood"
"I hope I get lucky tonight, knock on wood"

its so you dont jynx yourself..like if someone says "I have really good grades this year..knock on wood" and then they knock on wood its so they dont jynx themselves by after saying that, theyll get bad grades (i mean its so they dont get bad grades) and that was a made up example haha sorry if it sounded confusing

Altruistic answered Friday December 30 2005, 2:38 am:
It's based on a superstition where, if you dont want to jinx yourself, you might want to knock wood :)

To touch wood or knock on wood is a superstition action to ward off any evil consequences or bad luck, perhaps because of some recent action you’ve taken or untimely boasting about your good fortune (“I’ve never been in danger of drowning, touch wood”); it can also be a charm to bring good luck.
