Why be tolerant?

Question Posted Wednesday December 7 2005, 10:08 pm

Can anyone tell me a personal experience they've had with dealing with tolerance? Why is it important to be tolerant of others? The reason I'm asking this question is because I have to write an essay and I would like your input on this so I can include it in my examples. All 5's to anyone who give serious, thoughtful answers.

This isn't a personal experience but it is a good example.

The United States has been called the "Brain Drain" because for decades the smartest people in the world have come to America to experiment with new ideas and publish their findings. They come to America from countries that are not tolerant of their ideas. Because of this, America makes almost all of the scientific advances.

Another example of this is Anicent Rome and Greece. In these times people belived superstitions and that the gods caused everything. And you had to believe it. These countries were not tolerant of new ideas. If you were an astronomer and you said that the earth revolved around the sun, you would be put in jail or worse, killed. That way all the other astronomers would never say anything like that again.

I hope those things helped
Love

Tolerance is a large area to look at with many different levels.

Tolerance of others isn't necessarily just about personal dealings on a one to one basis it can be about a whole race, religion or section of society. Intolerence of others beliefs and lifestyles have been the basis of many wars and conflicts throughout history.

Intolerence is often based on ignorence and prejudice, and can be a hugely destructive force. On a more personal and one to one level, it can be the cause of racist, homophobic and other forms of anti-social behaviour.

Tolerance can also be about just simply putting up with your annoying neighbours, boss, best friends new girlfriend, or even family, mainly because you don't want to cause major problems for yourself and others by getting into any kind of conflict with them.

I know this is a long answer, but I hope it has helped,

Kizlode

My cousin has epilepsy and to keep her from having seisures, she is on medications that make her mentally retarded. I love her to death and have known her my whole life so things that she does don't affect me in the same way as they do others. Sometimes I see people looking at and staring at us when we're together and I know that they probably think that we are lesbians because she holds my hand and stuff. She's been in a situation where she was almost taken advantage of sexually, and I've seen people that get very irritated with her when she hugs them and hangs all over them. They don't understand how she is and are afraid of her in a way. I think that people need to be more tolerant of the handicapped. When an old woman is walking slowly in front of them, they just need to be patient and understanding. Who's to say they won't be in the same situation one day? Who's to say they won't have a mentally handicapped child? It really bothers me when people make fun of the mentally retarded because they're not stupid, they know that they're different and it bothers them. It's not something that they can help or change and they shouldn't be judged or punished for who they are. I hope I helped and good luck.

well, to me tolerance is the ability to accept a person's right to existence no matter what they're like and how much you may dislike their actions. you don't have to like them, but you have to accept them the way they are. one who's tolerent of others doesn't hate anyone and doesn't hold any prejudices based on any external characteristics, but bases his or her judgement of that person based directly on their behavior. if their judgement of the person is negative, they don't act towards them in a negative way, but they don't pretend to like them either.

i always try to turn my negative feelings toward some people into tolerance, accepting that although i might not be able to see or value enough this person's virtues, it doesn't mean that they don't have them or that i don't have any faults of my own.

being tolerant is an excellent quality to have. a tolerant person can usually communicate well, has patience obviously, and will ultimately survive in the real world. lets face it, life requires us to tolerate a lot of crap we dont want to deal with...take for example what if you had a verrry annoying boss or coworker, but a good job..you just have to tolerate it you know?
