I'm going away on a 10 day field trip with my school to Alabama ( I live in Georgia )I'm afraid of getting homesick. I used to get homesick all the time when I was little, then I just grew out of it. Now since I'm going to be away for a long time I don't know what I'm going to do. Any tips incase I get homesick?

I've been a summer camp counselor for two years and I have to help with homesickness all the time. Contact with your family, or having something to remind you of home isn't the best solution. That stuff can actually trigger homesickness. I've found that the best way to prevent it is not to put yourself in unstructured situations. Plan your day out to the minute and get excited about what you're going to be doing. Don't set aside time to relax and don't let yourself get bored. So, all in all, stay active and have as much fun as possible as often as possible. I'm sure you'll have a great time. Good luck! :) [ sizzlinmandolin's advice column | Ask sizzlinmandolin A Question ]

Mercy_x_Me answered Sunday November 27 2005, 10:14 pm: You should most likely be fine. As long as your with all your friends & everyone you go to school with, it should honestly feel like home. You spend more time in school than at home with your family in the course of an average week. If you need to, bring a picture from home of your bedroom/house/family. I tended to get home sick the most when I read letters from my family and when I talked about home. It can get hard. But, make the most out of your trip.* [ blondchk32's advice column | Ask blondchk32 A Question ]

Whenevr I felt homesick, I would read them and feel a whole lot better. Then, I would write back to them (even though I wasn't sending it to them really) answering any of the questions. It really will help. You can also send postcards. Try not to think about them, it's hard to, but keep your mind off of them. Bring pictures to look at, and if you have anything like a "blankie" or "teddy" bring it with you. My little sister used to bring it with her and sleep with it. Stay happy, and have fun because it helps you to forget worrying.

yourperfectdisaster answered Sunday November 27 2005, 9:15 pm: I used to get homesick when I was little also! It was crazy, I'd get homesick at a simple sleepover =/ But anyway, bring something with you that reminds you of your home or your family, like a picture or something. If you ever feel homesick, just look at the picture and it might make you feel a little better. Also, bring your pillow with you. I know it sounds obvious, and a little weird (for being homesick), it helps. At night, if you feel homesick, just hug your pillow. It helps ;)
