Question Posted Thursday November 17 2005, 3:57 pm
16/m. A guy in front of me in one of my classes drew an X on the back of his hands and said something about 'straight edge'. I was too much of an idiot to ask him, so can anyone help me out on what exactly that might mean? Is it bad or no?
IxAmxCrying answered Thursday November 17 2005, 6:36 pm: Edge is as said about NOT polluting your body.
In some areas edge is condemned, because some people who practice it end up crashing parties, and beating up people who like to harm their bodies. Though, I said in AREAS, not everywhere. Some other sXe kids just verbally like to take shots on people who drink, smoke etc. Personally, I think that's bad, because everyone has the right to live his/her life as he/she pleases. All fine things, of course, but I find it a little creepy that they have to make such a big deal about it with the X's and all. Plus, I think they have a reputation for being violent, though I can't really tell because it's not like all my friends are straight edge. But just because you are straight edge doesn't mean you're a saint, so it's up to you to judge whether or not it's good. They leave me alone, I leave them alone, and we get along just fine. Karen answered Thursday November 17 2005, 4:56 pm: It's not bad to be straight edge. If you're straight edge, it means that you do not participate in drinking, smoking, or having sex until you're married. [ Karen's advice column | Ask Karen A Question ]
MummuM answered Thursday November 17 2005, 4:11 pm: No, it isn't bad. It's just how some people choose to live their life and there's nothing wrong with that.
XoxBroKeNxoX answered Thursday November 17 2005, 4:05 pm: Umm.welll....the term was coined by the late D.C. punk/hardcore band Minor Threat, who promoted, through their lyrics, a lifestyle free of drugs, alcohol and casual sex. Ian Mackaye, the band's lead, claimed not to have started a movement, however, in today's underground(or not-so-underground) societies of punk and hardcore, it has become a full-on label. One who claims "the edge" does not participate in "poisoning" their bodies. No drugs, no alcohol, no casual sex(and others will include veganism, abstaining from medications, even so far as caffeine, etc). X's are used to represent "the edge".
