I would really discourage you from using any heat based products as asian hair is not the strongest of hair.
One of my best friends has really dead straight hair too. The way I curled her hair for her when she was a bridesmaid at her sisters wedding was to wet it and then ragroll it.
You get strip of cloth (a old t-shirt will do!) about 10 cm long then fold it in half and cut a alit in the centre of it acrossways then poke the end of your hair through the hole and rollit at a 45 degree angle up towards the top of your head. When it's next to your head tie the 2 ends together and get some hair mousse and put it on the lump you have created.
You can then do 1 of 2 things, you can blow dry it or (and this works FAR better) stick a pair of tights over your head and sleep on it!
Either way when you've dried it/woken up you simply cut the strips out and BOING, you have a full head of curls!
One word of warning though! If you decide to opt for the second option (Tights on head sylee!) make sure you take the tights off your head before you go down for breakfast as you could give your parents/siblings/housemates/postman one hell of a fright!

Garnier Fructis has this curl shaping spray gel that works soo good. you can get it at Wal Mart for less than 3$. you just scrunch your and it wont make your hair like hard.
Tresemme' has really good mousse that works good too if the spray gel doesn't work for you.
