Question Posted Tuesday November 8 2005, 7:39 pm

well, i wasnt sure wat to put this category under but w/e. it kind of does have to do with sports. the thing is, that my friends row. my best friend and these two guys i noe go to rowing. and i go to an all girls school so its really fun for me to do those things after school because i get to hang out with people i know outside of school on more days other than the weekend. but the thing is, that i also do ballet. i do ballet for two hours a day on monday's and wednesday's. but, people think thats like weak kind of. u noe, they think that because i dont do sports like the ones their doing, that im not really strong. but, for ballet, u have to be really strong. its not easy. you have to have a lot of strength, especially in your legs and in your calves. so, anyways, today this girl thats one of my best friends asked us (people at school) to go to rowing with her one day. and she seemed like she really really wanted us to go. so i told her that i would go with her and she told me that she didnt think i had the arm strength to do it. i was like EXCUSEMY! why does everybody think that i'm so weak. IM NOT! im actually really strong. im 4"11 and 14 years old, but im REALLy strong for such a little person. what should i do? how could i show everyone that im not a wimp? the thing is, that my mom has always wanted me to do "girly sports" which pretty much means like cross country, soccor, ballet (dancing is a sport!) and i go to the gym. i mean, like, i hav a busy scheduale. but, i really want to show everybody that i can row also! any ideas? just to show prove people wrong about body strength!

yes yes yes and yes. I'm a rower. when i saw this question i was like off the walls. sorry...

Ok well I'll tell you right now, rowing is more of a sport were 80% of the power you use comes from your legs, not your arms, contrary to popular belief. So yes, arms do play a role, but not even half of that as leg power does. Along with that is cardiovascular system, like that helps a lot more than muscle in some cases, especially your size [no offence].

Hmm have you ever seen an ergometer? If not check it out at www.concept2.com Its an indoor rowing machine, which is most commonly used around the world. There are different models, and that is a newer one so you might see the older model which is black. If she can teach you how to get the technique right, or even learn how online, find one if you can, and row on the machine. Set the machine to the standard 2000 meter test, which tests endurance, strength, and will power - its all a mind game.

So yeah, if you can't get out to actually row with her, try it on the machine. If you think a 2K [2000 meters] is too much, then try 500 meters instead.
(Sorry this answer is long, but I never get to answer a rowing question.) But yeah, I know what you mean about being looked at as not a sport, ballet that is. Ive played many sports, and none are easy, and actually find crew [rowing] to be the most difficult mentally and physically. So yes, by doing a 2K or 500 meter sprint, that can definatley show for your strength.
Incase you were wondering: for the 2K, start off strong for a minute, then pace yourself until the end, don't go all out right away, then just give it all you got when you have 250 meters left.
With the 500M sprint, its what it is, a sprint for 500 meters, which my lowest ever was a minute and 35 seconds. I can't say what you should shoot for, maybe under two minutes.

Anyways hoped that helped and good luck, drop 1 in my inbox if you have any questions and let me know how it goes.
