ncblondie answered Saturday November 5 2005, 5:45 am: A Pap smear is generally not painful. It may be a little uncomfortable since the sensation isn't something you're used to. The best thing to do is try to relax and focus on something else while the doctor is doing it. I've found that relaxing and doing deep breathing exercises while my ob/gyn is doing the exam helps.
Basically what they do is give you a gown to change into and tell you to get up on the exam table or chair. They'll ask you to slide to the end and put your feet in stirrups (things to support your feet). Then they'll insert a tool called a speculum inside you to help open you up a little so they can see. This is generally the uncomfortable spot so try to relax here. If you tend to be small inside, you can ask the doctor to use the smaller speculum. They generally have 2 sizes. Then, they swab your cervix with a long q-tip looking thing to get cell samples from your cervix. It generally doesn't hurt, just feels a little weird.

The worst it's ever been is a little stinging like a shot, but the discomfort doesn't last past getting off the table. It's more embarrassing than anything else and nothing to fret over. You'll be fine. [ zapreth's advice column | Ask zapreth A Question ]
LadyGoodman answered Saturday November 5 2005, 1:25 am: People say it hurt, but it didn't for me. It all depends on the person who is giving the pap smear and how comfortable you are with people touching you there. The more nervous you are, the more uncomfortable you will likely be. It's nothing to be afraid of, because even if it hurts you, it really doesn't last that long. Mostly, it feels just a bit weird. If you're still really nervous, tell the gynecologist you're really sensitive so that they will bear it in mind. You'll be fine.. it's not as scary as everyone makes it sound. Good luck!!
