Slow.....

Question Posted Saturday October 29 2005, 12:37 pm

I got a DELL 2400 bout a month ago and I have installed MSN 7.5 and my computer is running slower. I have about 89% free space on my hard disk. What can I do to make it run faster??? Thanks!

I agree with AGEHA... Your computer is most likely
infected with spyware &/or virii.

If you're running win98 download spybot Search & Destroy as it's free and gets rid of most of spyware.

If you're running win2k or winxp, go to microsoft.com and download their beta antispyware,
should be a link on the front page.

The other option would be a paid for program. I hear
counterspy is pretty good and only costs about 20$.

Oh yeah, one last thing. If your computer came
installed with Windows XP and your machine only has 128 Megabytes of ram, UPGRADE the ram to at least 256.
Windows XP is crippled with only 128M's of ram
and I still can't believe that they get away with
selling crippled machines like that. *sigh*

RAM might be an issue. Also, Dells are known to have performance issues. Many random things make them f up. I suggest the 'tower-out-the-window' method. Then buy a Mac.

Adaware is a great thing to have. Another great tool is Spybot. You can get it at [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

It's a good idea to run both virus scans and spyware scans once a week to keep your computer in peak condition.

Also, if you haven't already, I would suggest running disk defragmenter. Just go to start-programs-accessories-system tools-disk defragmenter and run it.

AGEHA answered Saturday October 29 2005, 2:34 pm:
Theres a very good chance that your computer came bogged down with unnecessary software. And merely judging by the wording of your question, I would say that you already have spyware, adware, or viruses on your computer. There are a couple things you can do to combat that.

Get Adaware and regularly scan for spyware/adware.

Free download: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Get AVG Free and scan your computer for viruses.

Use a browser other than Internet Explorer that stops popups and blocks malicious scripts. IE is very poor when it comes to security.

Firefox is by far my favorite browser, and should keep your computer running smoothly by blocking what adaware or AVG hasn't picked up yet. It has an import feature to copy your settings from IE to Firefox, so the transition between browsers should run smoothly.
